Holi is around the corner, and we are super-excited! However, Holi celebrations lead to lots of damage to our skin and hair. The chemicals in the colours, even when they are said to be herbal or organic, often end up leaving us with rough, frizzy and damaged hair and dry, cracked-up skin. No matter, how hard we try, it takes us days to get away from the Holi colour and months to get our skin and hair back to normal. Holi 2021 is already going to be a scary one keeping the COVID-19 scare in mind, let’s not allow the Holi colours to scare our skin and hair even more.

Before stepping out to play Holi, rub ice cubes on your face so that it closes the pores on your skin and stop the gulaal from entering into your skin. Wash your face and rub ice cubes for about 10-15 minutes to ensure that harmful colours don’t disturb your skin, leading to outbursts.
It is always good to step out of your house to play Holi applying organic essential oils on your skin to restore the natural skin texture. Essential oils help in treating acne and severe skin allergies, which can get worst otherwise when you play Holi. Add 1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of organic castor oil and 1 tablespoon of organic almond oil in a bowl and apply the mixture to your skin before going out. This will act as a barrier between your skin and Holi colours, keeping your skin moisturised.

If you plan to play Holi outside, your skin will not only be exposed to colours but also to sun and water, which can take away the moisture from your skin and leave you tanned. To avoid the same, it is always best to apply a lot of sunscreen lotion before stepping out.
Along with your skin, you need to take care of your nails as well, as generally, your nails are left with colour stains for the longest time. It is important to protect them from getting damaged and for the same, it is better to apply a thick coat of nail paint to keep the cuticles safe from the damage.

To protect your lips from being chapped because of the harmful colours and ending up with colour stains, it is advised to use petroleum jelly and not lipstick. The jelly will keep your lips hydrated and protect them from colours, allowing you to enjoy the festival to the fullest.
Usually, most of us end up washing our face with soaps and face washes to remove the colour, however, it is a wrong technique to remove the colour from your skin. Soaps and face washes are often made of chemicals that destroy the alkaline nature of your skin. Instead, it is better to use organic skin cleansing products. Also, don’t scrub your skin right after Holi as it can be harsh on your skin as it is already in a fragile state.

Natural products are best to pamper your skin after Holi as they not only soothe your skin but also restore the natural balance of it. You can use uptan made of curd and besan, or use rose water, turmeric and sandalwood on your skin. The natural ingredients have more healing powers and they always work wonders on your skin.
Oils always rescue your skin from falling apart. Olive oil is very mild in nature and thus is great for your skin. You can dab a cotton ball in olive oil and gently wipe off the colour from your skin after Holi, ensuring that your skin stays hydrated.

On the day of Holi, at night, before going to bed, make sure that you apply a mild moisturizer on your face. The Holi colours are harsh and harmful and they tend to take away the moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and patchy. Applying moisturiser at night will ensure that your skin is hydrated when you sleep, and you wake up with glowing skin the next day.
We all know how water works like a miracle for our body. Drinking 7-8 glasses of water in a day can keep skin problems and internal diseases at bay. Don’t forget to drink lots of water after Holi to keep your skin hydrated and acne-free.

Before playing Holi, it is important to cut down the split ends from your hair as usually, they end up catching and holding colours for the longest. Also, synthetic colours make your hair drier, leading to more split ends. Thus, it is better to get rid of them before the festival.
Before you start to oil your hair in the morning of Holi, wash and condition your hair the previous night. It might sound odd as your hair is ultimately going to get filthy, but this will definitely help your hair. You can also leave the conditioner in your hair before you step out for the celebration.

Oiling your hair, not only works as a protective shield but also prevents your hair from colour penetrating into its shaft and breakage while washing the colour off. You can use coconut oil or olive oil to massage your scalp and create a protective layer.
After applying oil to your hair, add another protective layer to it by covering them. You can either use a scarf or a bandana to cover your head. Don’t keep your hair open and tie them up into a bun or a tight ponytail as it will protect your scalp from absorbing the colour.

Rather than using hot water, wash your hair with plenty of cold water so that most of the colour comes off the hair. After that, use a mild organic shampoo to wash the colour from your scalp using your fingertips. Apply a deep conditioner to your hair and rinse thoroughly. It is better to use a hair serum after your hair is dry.
After Holi, rather than directly stepping into your bathroom to wash your hair, make sure that you brush your hair well. This will help you get rid of the dry colours from your hair.

After Holi, your hair needs extra care and nourishment. After two to three days of Holi, apply a hair mask to deal with the damage caused to your hair by the colours. To make a good hair mask, you can mix lemon, eggs, yoghurt and amla. You can also do a hair spa at home to add the moisture back to your hair.
Colours can hamper the growth of your hair and thus opting for trimming your hair can help you get rid of the ends, hampering hair growth. A new hair cut or trimming can boost healthier hair growth.
If possible, for the week after the Holi celebration, have a nice oil massage every night and follow it with a mild shampoo the next day to restore the moisture in your hair. To add softness to your hair, apply a mix of almond, coconut, olive and castor oil. You can also use only coconut oil.
