IAS Officer Bride Breaks Stereotypes, Refuses To Be A Part Of 'Kanyadaan' At Her Wedding

A wedding day is one of the most important days in one's life. It's the next phase, and thus, the brides-to-be and the grooms-to-be always try to organise their marriage precisely. They try to follow the traditions and rituals that their parents had followed in the old times. But times are changing, and so is the mentality of the new generation. There are many conservative and regressive rituals that are seeing the light of the day.

One such ritual in Hindu marriage is Kanyadaan, it is a custom performed by the bride's father where the bride is given away to her groom and the pandit recites the mantra that completes the ritual. But ever since Alia Bhatt's ad campaign for Mohey has been released, there has been a lot of buzz around it. The advertisement had talked about the ritual where a girl is seen as a product and has to be given away to the groom's family as an inheritance. And, Alia Bhatt, who portrays a bride's role, says, let's believe in Kanyamaan (Respecting Brides) instead of Kanyadaan.

An IAS officer bride, Tapasya Parihar, got married to an IFS  officer, Garvit Gangwar, in Joba village, Narsinghpur district in Madhya Pradesh. The bride broke all the stereotypes by refusing to be a part of the ritual, Kanyadaan. As per Aaj Tak, she told her father:

"I'm not a thing of charity. I am your daughter."

Media reports revealed that since childhood Tapasya had always questioned patriarchal customs. She had often questioned how society had accepted to 'donate' their child to someone else during the marriage. But the interesting fact is that not only Tapasya's family members had agreed to refuse the custom, but also her IFS groom, Garvit, had supported her.

As per the News18 report, Tapasya's father believes that these kinds of rituals are a "conspiracy" to "evict" the girl child from her father's place. He even said that the word daan shouldn't be used for a daughter.

Not just this, there are many such rituals that show how society looks upon women. A wedding should be a symbol of love, companionship, and respect, and all of these rituals just take a different toll on the patriarchy.

We hope Tapasya's bold move would set the right example for every bride out there!
