Ilhan Omar's Children, A Journey Into The World Of The U.S. Representative's Youngest Family Members

Ilhan Omar has been active in the political world for many years. In January 2019, she was sworn in as a Congress member and has been the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. Ilhan Omar has mostly prioritized problems related to student debt relief, immigration reform, education, and more. She is additionally serving on the House Budget Committee alongside the House Education and Workforce Committee. The 43-year-old is also a part of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Ilhan Omar was encouraged by her grandfather to join politics. She worked for the Minneapolis City Council and the University of Minnesota in the past. Ilhan has been a recipient of the Community Leadership Award from Mshale in 2015, and her name was included in the list of women changing the world by Time magazine in 2017. Ilhan Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, has been working as an activist for a long time

Isra Hirsi is the eldest child of Ilhan Omar, born from her first marriage to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi. The 23-year-old has been an activist for a long time and won the Brower Youth Award in 2019. Isra is mostly known as the co-founder and co-executive director of the US Youth Climate Strike. She was born in Minneapolis. Back in 2024, Isra also recalled her early days in the place while speaking to Seventeen magazine. Isra said that she spent a lot of time in the Minneapolis Central Library during her high school days. She further stated:

“I spent most of my childhood in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, just across from the park. The greenery extends to a wooded area with a path leading to the Mississippi River, which was one of my first encounters with nature. The meadow within the park is named after Annie Young, a local environmentalist who advocated for green spaces citywide during her tenure on the park board. This park holds so much sentimental value for me because of its role in my upbringing and its significance for environmentalists.”

Ilhan Omar’s other two children have maintained a distance from the limelight

Apart from Isra Hirsi, Ilhan Omar is a mother of two more children, Ilwad Hirsi and Adnan Hirsi. Compared to Ilhan’s eldest child, Ilwad and Adnan have been out of the spotlight for all these years. Notably, Ilhan had another child from her marriage to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi. Following their divorce in 2008, Ilhan Omar tied the knot with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. Three years later, they welcomed a child in 2012.

Although a lot of details about Ilhan Omar’s other two children remain unknown, Ilhan has addressed them in a few interviews in the past. Back in 2017, Ilhan recalled her early life and political career over the years when she spoke to Time magazine, stating that her children are the only reason that she has been working to do something better. Ilhan said during the conversation:

“My kids are the reason I continue to strive for something better. They know, as kids who are Muslim, Somali, black Americans, that they’ve always been part of a struggle and that change isn’t easy.”
