Influencer, Sharmishta Panoli Arrested In Gurugram For Her Controversial Remark, Court Denies Bail

Social media has given every human in the world complete freedom to share their thoughts on each and every occurrence across the globe within seconds. While this has created more transparency among people, it has also given birth to unverified claims, false information and a lot of negativity against one another. Something similar happened with the Instagram influencer, Sharmishta Panoli.

Sharmishta Panoli was arrested for her comment on 'Operation Sindoor'

It was on May 7, 2025, when the Indian Armed Forces executed a precision attack, 'Operation Sindoor', in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The attack was a response to the Pahalgam attack that took the lives of 26 innocent tourists earlier in April 2025. However, Sharmishta Panoli made a controversial statement about Bollywood's silence on the precision attack, which further led to her arrest.

The young Instagram Influencer, Sharmishta Panoli, was arrested by the Kolkata Police from Haryana's Gurugram on May 31, 2025. The influencer allegedly uploaded a video on her social media handle with a communal overtone. According to the reports, Sharmishta accused Bollywood actors of maintaining silence on 'Operation Sindoor'. Soon after, she was traced by the police in Gurugram and arrested. 

What Sharmishta Panoli posted on her social media handle

Sharmishta Panoli is a law student at Pune's Law University and a social media influencer. She has recently been criticised by several social media users for her comment on how several Hindi film actors have maintained their silence on Operation Sindoor. This created a serious outrage among the netizens after the post went viral. Resulting in the young influencer receiving numerous threats. 

Sharmishta's video was perceived as more violent than she wanted. However, considering the criticism, she soon deleted all the posts from her social media account and issued an official apology. Nonetheless, by that time, a complaint had already been registered against her, and a legal notice had been sent to her and her family members. According to the report by PTI, Sharmishta had distanced herself from her family, and her inability to serve the legal notice resulted in her arrest. A police officer told PTI:

"Several attempts were made to send legal notices to Panoli and her family, but they disappeared. After that, the police placed the matter before the court. The court issued her arrest warrant, and on Friday night, Kolkata Police arrested her from Gurugram."

Sharmishta Panoli's lawyer has appealed for bail

According to an ANI report, Sharmishta's lawyer, Mohomad Samimuddin, has applied for bail. The representative talked to the publication and revealed that the influencer's phone and laptop had already been seized by the police. For now, Sharmishta has been remanded to judicial custody till June 13, 2025. He was quoted as saying:

"We moved our bail application before the court, citing that the articles that have been allegedly stated by the prosecution to have been used, the mobile phone and the laptop, have already been seized. Subsequently, the court heard our prayer. The prosecution sought the police custody prayer, but it was turned down and rejected. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody till the 13th of June, 2025"

Netizens have reacted to the arrest of social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli. A user said, "This is not normal. It's genocidal and Mass Rape threats, STSJ threats online,
Request police to protect her from these radicals. Save Sharmishta Panoli." Another penned, "That poor girl Sharmishta Panoli deleted all her videos from her Instagram handle and apologized unconditionally." A comment read, "Seriously, remanded to Judicial custody, and what will they find out? In the end, nothing..."
