The Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau announced separation from his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, on August 2, 2023. The ex-couple had been married for 18 long years. In a post shared on the Instagram handles of the Canadian Prime Minister and his ex-wife, the duo said that their choice resulted from ‘many meaningful and difficult conversations’.
As per a statement shared by the Prime Minister’s office, they both signed a legal separation agreement. They have asked for privacy as they are navigating through this difficult phase.
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire first met when they were kids. Sophie was a classmate of Justin’s younger brother, Michel Trudeau. Their paths crossed again in 2003, when they co-hosted a charity event in Montreal, Canada. They started falling for each and eventually got engaged in 2004 on former Prime Minister and Justin’s late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s 85th birthday.
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire tied the knot on May 28, 2005, at Sainte-Madeleine d'Outremont Church in Montreal, Canada. The couple welcomed their first child, Xavier on October 18, 2007. Then, Sophie gave birth to their only daughter, Ella-Grace on February 5, 2009. And the duo became parents for the third time with their son, Hadrien on February 28, 2014.

Just a few months ago, the couple, Justin and Sophie celebrated their 18 years of togetherness. The Canadian prime minister shared a picture on his Instagram handle commemorating this event. He penned:
“Every mile of this journey together is an adventure. I love you, Soph. Happy anniversary!”
For the unversed, Justin Trudeau is the eldest son of the former prime minister of the country, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Pierre Trudeau married a Canadian activist, Margaret Sinclair in 1971. The couple welcomed Justin on December 25, 1971. Justin’s parents announced divorce when he was just five years old. Later, the couple, Pierre Elliott and Margaret, finalised their divorce in 1984.
In an incident in May 2016, an angry Justin Trudeau crossed the floor of the House of Commons to grab a legislator after getting frustrated with what he perceived as the opposition's stalling tactics, but instead accidentally elbowed a female parliamentarian in the breast. He apologised for the incident, claiming that he was only human.
Justin Trudeau and his family once visited India in 2018. The family made stops at several well-known places in our country, which were also accompanied by photoshoots as well. Their entire trip caught the media’s unnecessary attention due to cultural appropriation. The Canadian prime minister and his entire family had adorned themselves in Indian clothes during the visit. This did not go well with the netizens, and they started to troll Justin and his family.
Justin Trudeau, who lists assisting Canada's marginalised and underprivileged indigenous community as one of his top objectives, was compelled to issue an apology in March 2019 after making a disparaging remark to an indigenous woman, who disrupted a fundraiser to voice her displeasure over substandard living circumstances. The Canadian prime minister also broke ethics regulations and has faced three ethics investigations in his term.
