Netflix's latest thriller show, Baramulla, has taken the audience on a chilling ride through the show-clad valley of Kashmir. It reveals the mesmerising landscape, hiding secrets of missing children, buried secrets, and supernatural forces. Leaping over the romantic movies made around Kashmir, Baramulla has brought viewers a fresh tale of mystery, horror, and emotion. While everyone is enjoying the show, several fans have been left wondering if it is based on a real story. If you are one of them, let us understand what's true about the story and what's not.
While the story of Baramulla feels incredibly real, it is not based on any true incident. The film, written by Aditya Sulas Jambhale, Monal Thaaakar and Aditya Dhar, is a fictional story that draws inspiration from human trauma and grief. The story revolves around 'DSP Ridwaan Sayyed', played by Manav Kaul. He is a police officer, investigating the mysterious disappearances of children from the Kashmir valley. When the panic of missing children spreads further, and no clues are found. 'Ridwaan' finds himself face-to-face with home-horror truths that risk his family's safety.

During an interview with DNA India, the film's director, Aditya Suhas Jambhale, shared that Baramulla was not like a typical horror movie. Instead, the story came to him in pieces, reflecting human trauma and emotion. He believed that the most effective horror stories were the result of real human experiences of pain, loss, and fear, which made a fictional story feel more chilling and real. In his words,"

Manav Kaul, who brings the character of 'DSP Ridwaan' to life, opened up about the nuances of his role to CNN-News 18. He shared that the director of the show weaved the story in a way that the characters had multi-dimensional stories. Every character had its own set of layers with emotional depth. Likewise, the film was not just based on supernatural elements but rather explored how trauma and grief shaped people's behaviour, making every horror story feel more personal on the show.

Apart from its emotional focus, Baramulla draws inspiration from Indian folklore, mythology, and culture. According to Lokesh Dhar'sDhar, producer of Indian Today, there is still much for Indian cinema to explore in folk traditions. He admitted that the movie draws inspiration from Kantara, Hereditary, The Witch, and The Haunting of Hill House, specifically in its slow-burning, psychological thriller approach, which caters to the intelligence of audiences. Sharing his approach, Lokesh penned;
