Who was Jack DeJohnette? What was he popular for?

Jack DeJohnette (1942–2025) was an acclaimed American jazz drummer, pianist, and composer renowned for his versatility, innovation, and ability to blend styles. An NEA Jazz Master and multiple Grammy winner, he was celebrated for his work with some of jazz's most iconic figures, including Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett. Jack DeJohnette replaced Tony Williams in Miles Davis's live band in 1969 and became the primary drummer on the groundbreaking fusion album, Bitches Brew.

Jack's drumming during this period was a key component of Miles' electric-era sound, combining improvisational jazz with rock grooves. For over 25 years, Jack DeJohnette was a key member of a group, The Standards Trio, consisting of pianist, Keith Jarrett and bassist, Gary Peacock. The trio was one of the most beloved live acts in jazz, revitalizing the acoustic jazz tradition with fresh interpretations of classic songs. Over his long career, Jack released more than 50 albums.

Jack's work demonstrated a stunning range, from the spacious jams of his band, Directions, to the more playful and colorful sound of his later groups, New Directions and Special Edition. Though most recognized as a drummer, he was also a schooled pianist and would sometimes record and tour using only that instrument. He first began his musical career with piano lessons at the age of four.
