Jackie Chan is one of the most renowned movie stars in the world, from South to North and East to West; it's hard to find a place where people aren't aware of him. He is often labeled the cinema's most lovable daredevil, thanks to his flips, falls, and fights throughout his five-decade acting career. He was born as Chan Kong-sang on April 7, 1954, in Hong Kong and went on to make his mark in Hollywood. Jackie Chan blended Charlie Chaplin's humour with Bruce Lee's martial arts, creating a new genre that became his legacy.
Jackie Chan made his acting debut with the film, New Fist of Fury (1975). However, he first gained recognition for his work in Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master, which were released in 1978. Some of his most iconic films include Police Story, Drunken Master II (Legend of the Drunken Master), Rush Hour, The Young Master, Wheels on Meals, The Forbidden Kingdom, The Karate Kid, and Rumble in the Bronx. He has appeared in over 200 films and has not just broken box-office records but also broken his bones, which is why he received an Honorary Oscar in 2016 for his extraordinary achievements in cinema.

With so many awards and trophies to his name, Jackie Chan is also the first Chinese actor in Hollywood to receive the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002. Fast forward to 2025, and some AI-generated Facebook posts speculated that Jackie Chan wasn't alive, shocking the world. However, after some fact-checking, it turned out to be nothing but another classic case of misinformation in the time of AI. Well, despite being an incredible actor on the big screen, Jackie Chan has suffered a series of hiccups along the journey, and unfortunately, all of them occurred in his personal life. The man who was so charming on the big screen and added joy and laughter to the lives of so many people has a controversial personal life. So, without further ado, let's explore the kind of husband and father he was in the past.

In 1982, Jackie Chan got married to the famous Taiwanese actress, Joan Lin Feng-jiao. The couple met through Hong Kong's film circuit, dated in secret for some time, and married in secret in Los Angeles. Later that same year, Chan became a father when Feng-jiao gave birth to a baby boy, whom they named Jaycee Chan. Due to Jackie Chan's highly demanding acting career in Hollywood, he couldn't provide enough time for his wife and son. He has admitted it in his memoir, Never Grow Up. He wrote:
"I've done my duty to my son and his mother, but I wasn't a good husband or father."

Unfortunately, it was in 2014, when Jackie Chan and Joan Lin Feng-jiao's son, Jaycee Chan, was arrested in Beijing under the possession of marijuana and also for sheltering other users. It was a shocking blow to the couple and brought immense shame to their entire family. Jaycee was fined 2,000 Chinese Yuan and sentenced to 6 months in prison. While on one side, Jackie was China's official anti-drug goodwill ambassador, it brought him immense embarrassment when his own son was caught in the same. However, Jackie took the blame and said:

"As a public figure, I feel very ashamed; as his dad, I'm very sad and disappointed. I didn't teach him well."
Even before his son's arrest, he had publicly announced that he would donate half of his fortune in charity, and Joycee had to become worthy of the other half. However, in 2012, he reportedly declared that he would donate 100 per cent of his fortune to charity. Some people speculated that he had probably known about his son's inclination towards drugs. Luckily, he ended his story with drugs, and in 2024, Jaycee ventured into music. While things are coming back, there's still nothing much to say about his bond with Jackie Chan. The father-son duo's bond still looks fragile due to the past controversy.

Moving on to another incident that brought Jackie Chan a lot of shame. It was in 1999 that his extramarital affair was exposed in public. He was romantically involved with former Miss Asia winner, Elaine Ng Yi-Lei, and they even had a daughter, Etta Ng Chok Lam. The actor endured significant humiliation in China, but his wife, Joan Lin Feng-jiao, remained silent, and even Elaine Ng Yi-Lei chose to raise their daughter as a single mother. There was no drama in the media between the two ladies.
However, in a 2018 video, Etta Ng Chok Lam revealed that she is living homeless in Canada with her girlfriend, due to homophobic parents. Once again, Jackie Chan was criticised for allegedly abandoning his daughter. Till now, we have never seen Jackie associating with Etta in public, and if the reports are to be believed, both he and Elaine Ng Yi-Lei have reportedly abandoned their homosexual daughter. While some call Jackie Chan an "absentee father" and troll him for cheating on his wife, there are some people who think he deserves forgiveness because he has accepted his mistakes publicly. The internet remains divided, and that's the beauty of it.
