NFL star and New England Patriots linebacker, Jahlani Tavai and his partner, Kalei Mau, are one of the most popular couples in the league. But behind the bright lights of the NFL world, a tragedy has struck the couple. They recently announced the heartbreaking loss of their unborn daughter in November 2025. The emotional reason reveals why Jahlani was absent from the field last month. Kalei's routine pregnancy turned into a life-threatening medical crisis, which has now left the family grieving over the loss of an unborn child.
Kalei Mau revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she was six months pregnant in November 2025. But before she could announce the good news to the world, her severe medical complications took a heartbreaking turn. According to Kalei, she developed an "extremely rare blood infection", which led to an infection in her placenta. At the same time, her organs began failing in a critical condition. Consequently, their unborn daughter passed away in the womb. In her words:
"This is my testimony. This is not how I wanted to announce my second pregnancy,, but I was already six months pregnant with another beautiful baby girl. Unfortunately, with my organs failing and the sickness infecting my placenta, our baby passed away in my womb. He said it was like my body just knew what to do."

Kalei shared that when she was unconscious, her body went into natural labor, and after several hours, Jahlani saw him deliver their unconscious baby. The incident was a significant emotional trauma for the family, who were expecting their daughter in March 2026.

Kalei Mau, a prominent volleyball star, revealed that she was placed into a medically induced coma on November 20, 2025, and doctors worked hard to save her life. She expressed her gratitude to god that she was able to wake up. Kalei added that during the recovery, she realised that she had to continue living for family and her elder daughter, Honua.

During one of the most emotional parts of her post, Kalei revealed that when she was discharged from the hospital, she finally got to meet her unborn daughter for the final time, and they named her baby Ka ua. The name is a Hawaiian translation of the word "rain." Recalling the moment, Kalei penned:

"The day after I got out of the hospital, I got to kiss my daughter for the first and last time. She was perfect for me. It was so hard to leave her. But when I walked outside, it started to rain, and it brought me joy to know she'll always be with me."
Kalei Mau is a successful professional volleyball player with an international career spanning Puerto Rico, France, and the Philippines. She has represented the Philippine national team and was named MVP of the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference in 2019. Kalei was raised in Kahalu'u, Hawaii, and she is deeply connected to her roots and culture. Apart from sports, she is a musician, wellness advocate, and founder of the "Kaleihulu Health" initiative. She enrolled at the Harvard Business School in August 2023. Kalei and Tavai share one living daughter, Honua, born in November 2024.

Jahlani Tavai is a linebacker for the New England Patriots. He was drafted during the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He joined the Patriots in 2021 and has since become a key defensive contributor for the team. He had posted over 100 tackles in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. However, the 29-year-old's absence in the Patriots' Week 12 game against the Cincinnati Bengals for "personal reasons" had raised eyebrows. But now, fans understood the family's tragedy. Jahlani returned to action earlier this season after beginning on the injured reserve. He had last played against the New York Giants on December 2, 2025.
We send our heartfelt to Jahlani Tavai and Kalei Mau for their loss.
