Veteran actress, Jaya Bachchan is one of the most celebrated and graceful stars of Bollywood, who once ruled over Hindi and Bengali cinema. The actress just turned 77 on April 9, 2025, and she is celebrating with gratitude and reflection on her acting career. On her birthday, Jaya Bachchan opened up about her children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda, expressing her pride to be their mother. She also shared her views on ageing and talked about her glorious career in cinema, opening up about the roles she enjoyed playing.
On the occasion of her 77th birthday, Jaya Bachchan had a candid chat with The Times of India, taking a stroll down memory lane, from her acting career to motherhood and ageing naturally. While the veteran actress has numerous awards and accolades to her name, for Jaya Bachchan, her greatest accomplishment lies in being a mother. Speaking fondly of her children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda, she said:
“There is not a single day in my life when I don’t look at them with pride, for being such fine human beings. I am so glad we didn’t bring them up to be spoilt brats.”
In the same conversation, Jaya Bachchan also shared her views on aging and the growing trend of cosmetic enhancements in the film industry. Today’s showbiz culture is heavily fixated on preserving youth, often leading actors and actresses to opt for artificial treatments like Botox, fillers, and surgeries to alter their appearance. Talking about the idea of botox treatment, the Abhimaan actress admitted that she has never undergone botox or any other cosmetic treatment. She views ageing as a symbol of authenticity and has embraced this natural process as a badge of honour. In Jaya’s words:
“I’m very proud of every wrinkle and grey hair. I never used anything artificial on my face. Never will.”
Throughout her film career, Jaya Bachchan has played various roles, some of the iconic ones being in Guddi, Uphaar, Mili, Koshish, and more. Those characters, though memorable, showed her as a strong, virtuous woman. However, in her recent work, Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, she got to play a wicked character, ‘Dhanlakshmi Radhawa.’ Reflecting on this, the actress shared:
“Oh, that was very long ago. Now, I’ve no such ambitions. I’m just happy doing the occasional interesting role that comes my way. Recently I was in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. I really enjoyed being wicked for the first time… I loved it… All my career, I have played these noble women. About time I tried something else.”
Jaya Bachchan is not on social media, but this didn’t stop her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, from celebrating her Nani. On her 77th birthday, Navya shared a beautiful photo of her and Jaya Bachchan on her IG Stories, writing, “Happy birthday Nani”.
