Veteran Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party MP, Jaya Bachchan has made a strong remark about the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, 2025. She said that the river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, where millions are taking a dip during the ongoing Kumbh Mela, has contaminated water. This is because of the people who were killed in the recent Maha Kumbh stampede, their bodies were dumped in the Ganges.
A video by ANI has gone viral where Jaya questioned the UP government to provide figures for the number of deaths that took place during the Kumbh Mela stampede. Jaya had spoken to reporters outside the Parliament recently and said that the most contaminated water right now is in the Kumbh. Bodies of those who died in the stampede have been thrown in the river because of which the water has been contaminated. This is the water which is being used by the people there. No one has clarified this. In her words:
"Jal shakti ke upar sawal uthaye gaye. Pehle mei bhi contaminated water ke upar kafi kuch bol chuki hu. Sabse zyada contaminated water ess waqt Kumbh mei hai. Uske liye koi safai nai dere. Bodies joh pani mei dal di gayi hai. Ussei pani contaminated hua hai. Yahi pani logo tak pahuch raha hai waha. Eske upar kooi safai nai dere hai aur pura eyewash kia jara hai aur sawal uthare."
Rakesh Tripathi from BJP, slammed the senior actress and said that Ms Bachchan is a good actor. Whatever she said is from a written script that had good dialogue. For the unversed, the Maha Kumbh Mela is a sacred religious Hindu event that started on January 13, 2025, and will end on February 26, 2025. The Maha Kumbh Mela came after 144 years and took place at the 'Triveni Sangam' of river Ganga, Yamuna and mythical river, Saraswati at UP's Prayagraj. It was on January 29, 2025, when, as per an NDTV report, 30 people died when a sea of crowd broke the barricades to take a dip at the Sangam. They had gone to take the Amrit Snan during the 'Mauni Amavasya'.
The Additional District Magistrate of the Maha Kumbh, Vivek Chaturvedi, revealed that the water is safe for taking the holy snan. He told in an interview with NDTV that a team from the pollution control board is doing sample testing of the river from different ghats daily and the levels are within control. Reportedly more than Rs. 7,000 crore has been spent on the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025 by the state government. He further added:
"The second area of attention is the pooja waste which is going into the rivers - there are flowers, coconuts and other things which are offered as part of rituals. We have deployed machines on various ghats to fish these out of the river every two hours."
