In the dazzling history of Bollywood’s iconic fairytale weddings, one particularly heartwarming moment that stood out was shared not between the bride and groom but between the saas and bahu. Just before the wedding, Jaya Bachchan publicly welcomed her daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, to the family with so much love and respect that the latter could not hold back happy tears.

During the 2007 Filmfare Awards, before Aishwarya even became a Bachchan by name, her would-be mother-in-law, veteran actress, Jaya Bachchan, publicly welcomed her into the family in the most heartfelt way. After accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Abhimaan actress took the opportunity to welcome Aishwarya in front of the whole industry. Jaya’s speech from the event was:

“I had been offered this award earlier, but I didn’t accept it because I felt like the time wasn’t right. Today, I'm going to be a mother-in-law all over again to a wonderful, lovely girl, who has great values, has a great dignity and a lovely smile. I welcome you to the family. Love you… So I thought this would be the right time to accept this award. I'd like to say, Almighty, whoever he or she, hum ko man ki shakti dena, man vijay kare. Jhooth se door rahe aur sach ka man bharein. Thank you so much.”

A visibly emotional Aishwarya, seated among the audience, couldn’t hold back tears at this heartfelt declaration of love, trust and acceptance from her soon-to-be mother-in-law. This golden moment has resurfaced on social media and is now going viral once again. Fans are revisiting the warm saas-bahu bond that once made headlines for all the right reasons. 

When Jaya praised Aishwarya on Koffee With Karan

This was not the only time that Jaya Bachchan was seen being vocal about her love and admiration for Aishwarya. The veteran actress never misses a chance to appreciate her bahu. During her appearance on Koffee With Karan, when asked whether Aishwarya was a perfect fit for the family, Jaya replied:

“I think so. I think its wonderful because she is such a big star herself. But when we all are together, I have never ever seen her push herself… she’s quiet, she listens, and she’s taking it all in… She’s fitted in so well… she knows that this is family, these are good friends, this is how one is supposed to be… she’s a strong lady, she has a lot of dignity."

Jaya Bachchan once called Aishwarya her ‘buddy’

In India, there’s a common stereotype that mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law are always at odds. But Jaya Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have shared a very different equation right from the start. From day one, Jaya made it clear that she wouldn’t indulge in gossip or behind-the-back politics. Speaking to Rediff once, Jaya Bachchan shared:

“She is my buddy. If I don't like something about her, I tell her on her face. I don't do politics behind her back. If she disagrees with me, she expresses herself. Only difference is that I can be little more dramatic, and she has to be more respectful…We really enjoy sitting at home and talking rubbish. Just the two of us... I have a great relationship with her.”

Ongoing speculations about a rift in the Bachchan family

Rumours have been swirling about a possible rift within the Bachchan family recently, especially after Aishwarya and her daughter, Aaradhya, arrived separately from the rest of the family at the wedding festivities of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant last year. Aishwarya and Jaya Bachchan's lack of public appearances in recent times has only added fuel to the fire.
