Jaya Bhattacharya has long been one of India's most recognisable villains on TV. Whether it was her iconic role of 'Payal' in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi or playing negative leads in Kasamh Se and Thapki Pyar Ki, she has been a popular villain on the small screen. Yet, despite spending decades as the face of TV antagonism, the actress insists that slipping in and out of intense characters has never been as difficult as people think it to be. In fact, she recently shared with us her simple approach to doing so, and she has been preparing for her another upcoming role as a Kothawali.
Jaya Bhattacharya recently sat down for a conversation with Bollywoodshaadis. She shared that when it comes to switching between positive and negative roles, it all comes down to emotional understanding, rather than memorising lines. Instead of focusing on exact dialogues, she relies on feeling and understanding her character to portray it authentically. In her words:
"It is just about feeling and understanding. Simply like you have to give a monologue, you can't cram it. If you cram, you will miss out line. While learning the theories in physics or remembering stuff from Geography or Physics, you have to understand. The moment you understand and give your heart to it, you can deliver anything."

Her process for understanding and portraying any character remains the same. Whether she plays a vamp or the mother of a multi-layered protagonist, she emotionally immerses herself in the role, making it easy to switch. It has helped her break away from the 'villain stereotype' that once defined her early career on TV.

Jaya Bhattacharya has recently stepped into the musical theatre with Kaneez, a shift she calls both refreshing and creatively nourishing. Interestingly, she reveals the most difficult part of the transition was not the performance, but her own exhaustion after working continuously for so long. Jaya revealed that Kaneez came to her after she took a break from acting to work on running her animal welfare NGO.

Amid the break, the 47-year-old has worked on films such as Tere Ishq Mein, Delhi Crime, and Gustaakh Ishq. Still, she was looking for an even challenging project when Kaneez came her way, and she felt it was the right project at the right time. Especially during rehearsals, she realised how the script had even hidden layers, and her role of 'Zeenat Aapa' carries a deeply emotional story. Unlike the stereotypical roles, her role revolves around 13 emotions, making it one of the richest artistic roles of her career.
