American astronaut, James Arthur Lovell, popularly known as Jim Lovell, was one of the first three astronauts to fly to and orbit the Moon. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he became a flight instructor and safety engineering officer at Naval Air Station Oceana in 1961. He was the first person to fly into space four times and the first to fly to the Moon twice.
Jim Lovell had many achievements to his name as he was the recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honour and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The veteran astronaut bid adieu to the world on August 7, 2025, at the age of 97. Just like his successful career, Jim’s marriage to Marilyn Lovell also stands as a testament to true love that lasted for 71 years.
Jim and Marilyn’s love story began in high school. It was at Juneau High School in Milwaukee where she met Jim, and the two soon fell in love and started dating. While studying in college, Marilyn transferred from Wisconsin State Teachers College to George Washington University in Washington, DC, where Jim had attended the US Naval Academy.
On June 6, 1952, Jim Lovell married Marilyn, and he proudly told everyone that he ‘married the prettiest girl from Wisconsin’. Jim Lovell was not just a passionate astronaut, but a loving husband too, who doted on his wife. He once named a mountain on the Moon for his wife, Marilyn. The name, Mount Marilyn, was officially recognised by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2017. Her obituary reads:
“A legacy of Marilyn’s is a triangular shaped mountain on the moon that bears her name, Mount Marilyn. Jim named the mountain while mapping future landing sites during his historic Apollo 8 mission. This landmark mountain stands prominent along the edge of the moon’s Sea of Tranquility representing the steadfast strength Marilyn had throughout her life.”
Jim and Marilyn lived in many locations because of his constant postings. However, the couple spent their lives enjoying each and every moment with their friends and family. Jim and Marilyn’s 71 years of love and marital bliss came to an end when she passed away on Aug. 27, 2023, in Lake Forest. After Marilyn’s death, Jim grieved and lived with her memories.
On August 7, 2025, Jim bid adieu to the world and travelled to be in his heavenly abode to be with his late wife. Announcing the same, his family released a statement that can be read as:
“We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father, USN Captain James A. ‘Jim’ Lovell, a Navy pilot and officer, astronaut, leader, and space explorer. We are enormously proud of his amazing life and career accomplishments, highlighted by his legendary leadership in pioneering human space flight.”
Jim Lovell and Marilyn Lovell led the most successful lives together. They had four children, eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
