Meet Jamal Khashoggi's Widowed-Wife, Hanan Elatr And Know Why Her Letter To Donald Trump Is Trending

US President, Donald Trump gave a warm welcome to Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salem when he hosted him at the White House on November 18, 2025. During their meeting, Trump defended the Saudi Crown Prince after a reporter raised the unsolved case of the "Murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi" back in 2018. The US President snapped at the reporter, saying, "You don't have to embarrass our guest", in an attempt to shield Bin Salem from the controversial questions.

Not only this, the US President also told the reporter that the Saudi Crown Prince "knew nothing" about the killing and dismissed the speculations that he ordered it. What's interesting is the fact that US Intelligence, CIA, has already implicated Mohammed Bin Salem in the killing of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. Thus, Donald Trump's words directly rejected the CIA reports, which have now widened the controversy.

US President, Donald Trump rejected the claims linking Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salmen with Jamal Khashoggi's death and also praised the Saudi leader by labelling him as "He is one of the most respected people in the world", mentioning his record on human rights. Upon Trump's defensive comments on him, Bin Salem came forward and addressed the unfortunate death of Jamal, saying that it was painful to hear such news, but his government took all the right steps of investigation. He said:

"We've improved our system to be sure that nothing happened like that. And it's painful and it's a huge mistake."

Saudi-based journalist, Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, reportedly by the agents of the Saudi government. For the uninitiated, Jamal entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 2, 2018, to pick up important legal documents and paperwork for his forthcoming marriage to Hatice Cengiz. According to a report in the BBC, the journalist was ambushed by a 15-member Saudi team who reportedly strangled him soon after his entry.

If the Turkish officials are to be believed, Jamal Khashoggi was injected with a sedative and his body was removed from the consulate. An audio recording captured his final moments, including his last words, "I can't breathe", as per the Turkish intelligence. Since his assassination in Turkey, Jamal's wife, Hanan Elatr Khashoggi, has been raising her voice to secure justice, closure, and accountability on the matter of her husband's death. She even wrote a letter to US President, Donald Trump, asking for four specific things. The first thing she demanded was her husband's remains so she and his family members could give him a proper religious burial.

The second request that Hanan Elatr Khashoggi put in front of Donald Trump is to help her seek her husband's personal belongings, like his cell phone, laptop, and other things. The third request is to serve his husband a meaningful justice by mentioning the names of the people involved in Jamal's assassination. The fourth request that she made in her letter to the US President is that she also deserves compensation like Jamal's four children received upon his death.

What's interesting is the fact that Jamal Khashoggi was previously married to Hanan Elatr Khashoggi. Although they didn't divorce legally, according to reports, Jamal was on the verge of marrying an Istanbul-based woman named Hatice Cengiz. Unfortunately, the marriage couldn't happen due to his unfortunate assassination, after which Hatice and Hanan came together and actively fought to seek justice. However, in the following years, Hatice stopped fighting as she didn't have many legal rights because she wasn't Jamal's official wife.

On the other side, Hanan Elatr Khashoggi is still fighting for the four demands that we mentioned above because she is still the legal wife/widow of the late journalist. During a 2019 interview, Hanan even talked about the growing closeness between the US and Saudi Arabia and shared how it could finally help her seek justice. She said:

"As the US-Saudi bilateral relationship grows, and the U.S. considers a mutual defence pact and nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, a settlement will be a goodwill gesture by their government to finally implement accountability towards me and my husband, and to once and for all finally resolve this issue."

Fast forward to November 2025, and the way Donald Trump has defended the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salem, has definitely cast doubts on the possibility of Hanan Elatr Khashoggi receiving a positive response to her letter from the US President.
