Jubilant Sykes was a well-known jazz and opera singer who had once been nominated for a Grammy as well. He had shown his singing prowess in many renowned music festivals and opera houses. However, in a shocking piece of news, it was reported that Jubilant was killed on December 8, 2025. Even more astounding is the fact that his son, Micah Sykes, has been taken into custody as the prime suspect. Here's everything to know about Jubilant Sykes and his alleged murder. 

Opera singer, Jubilant Sykes, found dead at his Santa Monica home

On December 8, 2025, around 9:20 p.m., Jubilant Sykes's wife, Cecelia called the police to their home situated on Delaware Avenue, Santa Monica, LA. As per police reports, the officers found the 71-year-old singer gravely injured with seemingly stab wounds. The Santa Monica Fire Department declared the singer dead at the scene. Amid all this, Jubilant's son, Micah Sykes, has been taken into custody as the prime suspect.

Jubilant and his wife, Cecelia, have three sons. One of his children, Micah, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his father. According to reports, the deceased's wife had called the police after witnessing the confrontation between father and son. The exact motive behind the homicide is not yet known. However, as per The New York post, Jubilant and Micah were embroiled in a domestic dispute. Along with that, neighbours of the late singer, who had also known Micah, shared with the portal that his son might have mental health issues. One of the neighbours even shared that Jubilant himself had warned them about his son. Micah is reportedly 31. 

Jubilant Sykes was an LA-based Grammy-nominated opera singer

Jubilant Sykes was born in Los Angeles and spent his whole life there. While growing up, he had sung soprano and shown an affinity for music and baritone even as a young boy. He was a well-recognised jazz and opera singer in the music circles. Jubilant had made a name for himself and had filled many renowned opera houses and halls in the world with his voice. He had sung in venues such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Kennedy Center, London's Barbican Centre, Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Hollywood Bowl, New Orleans Jazz, among many more. Talking about his filmography, Jubilant's own website says:

"He made his film debut in the movie Freedom playing the African slave Ozias. He later played the lead in the play Breath and Imagination by Daniel Beaty on the life of Roland Hayes at the Hartford Stage. In New York at the New York City Center, he portrayed Pompey in the musical Bloomer Girl and Henry Richard Lee in the musical 1776. In late 2023, he will appear in the suspense/thriller Fin."

Jubilant had also performed as the Celebrant in Leonard Bernstein's recording of Mass. The recording was made with the Morgan State University Choir and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for Naxos Records. It was also nominated for a Grammy in 2009. Apart from this, Jubilant had also collaborated with many other artists, such as classical guitarist Christopher Parkening. Talking about how he found a passion for music, Jubilant had shared with The Post:

“I liked singing, so I tried out for the boys’ choir. When that was over, she called home and told my parents to forget about the piano lessons I was taking and to concentrate on reading music and singing instead.”

Jubilant Sykes' death mourned by his neighbourhood community

Jubilant Sykes was a frequent presence at the neighbourhood's church, and many of his neighbours spoke to the outlet about his angelic voice. One of them shared that the late opera singer would come to the church and sing whenever asked. The tight-knit community that loved Jubilant Sykes is still mourning the violent demise of the opera singer. Meanwhile, Jubilant had once talked about his parents' impact on his career and said:

“It’s like my dad says, ‘Jubilant, the goal is to sing, to communicate. That’s it.' So it doesn’t really matter if you’re singing Mozart or Stevie Wonder. The point is the same to me... It’s interesting when people meet my parents. My dad seems to be a tough man, and you’d think he’d be the practical one. But it was my mom who always said I should think about law or real estate.”
