Juhi Chawla's Husband, Jay Recalls Making USD 75 Million Investment In KKR In Times Of 'Huge Debt'

Shah Rukh Khan's journey into IPL was widely loved and appreciated when he purchased the cricket team, Kolkata Knight Riders, in 2007. However, he wasn't the sole owner of the team. The actor had invested in the IPL team with his co-star, Juhi Chawla and her husband, Jai Mehta. The trio's team had gained a lot of limelight, despite the poor performance. The golden and black jersey, which has now been changed into purple, was the highlight of every IPL season.

Juhi Chawla's husband, Jay Mehta, talked about the debt and purchasing KKR in the team

In an interview shared on the Institute For Management Development's YouTube channel, Jay Mehta shared wise advice from his years of business experience. He stated that one should not take a lot of debt. The star husband revealed that once he landed in a huge debt trap, which almost destroyed him. Sharing his thoughts, Jay revealed:

"First of all, don’t take on too much debt because we got into a debt trap and it almost destroyed us. Secondly, you have to build a great team, try and hire the best people and going forward… I think, again curiosity, reading a lot, learning about business practices, things like that. Keeping yourself informed about what’s going on and keeping yourself ahead of the curve. I think those are important things."

Further, Jay talked about investing in Shah Rukh Khan's IPL team and stated that people around him called it a 'crazy' investment, but he was quite confident that it was going to work out in his favour. Jay revealed that his business was through a difficult time, but he still chose to make the investment of 75 million US Dollars. He was quoted as saying:

"In between all this, when we were also going through the difficult times, I got an opportunity to invest in cricket. Everybody said you are crazy, completely crazy. I said, ‘look, I really believe in this. I want to do it’. When the auction came up, it was like a USD 75 million acquisition, and I had partnered with a friend of mine to do this, but other people were actually taking the document and did not understand the business model, and when you looked at the business model, it was a cash flow model."

Jay termed his investment in KKR as 'very small', but he believed in the format of the cricket. He knew that it would become huge in India, just like American football in the US or football games in Europe. So, despite facing terrible financial debts, he invested in Shah Rukh's dream team along with his wife, Juhi.
