Kabir Bedi Calls Rekha 'Sensitive', Recalls 'Khoon Bhari Maang' Shooting Days, 'It Was Never Like..'

Kabir Bedi is one of the most popular actors who ruled the film industry during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.  He is a well-known name in the entertainment world. His role in the 1988 hit film, Khoon Bhari Maang, made him an overnight sensation and changed the course of his Bollywood career. For the unversed, Kabir Bedi shared the screen space with Bollywood diva, Rekha in the 1988 film, Khoon Bhari Maang, which was a box office success and achieved both critical and commercial acclaim. In a recent interview, Kabir Bedi recalled being offered the role in the 1988 film and also shared many facts about his co-star, Rekha.

Kabir Bedi recalls the moment when he got a call from Rakesh Roshan for the role of Khoon Bhari Maang

Kabir Bedi recently sat for an interview with Siddharth Kannan and recalled the time, when he was shooting for another project in Hawaii. During the shoot, he got a call from renowned filmmaker, Rakesh Roshan, who wanted to cast him in his film, Khoon Bhari Maang. Kabir shared how the director couldn’t find any actor, who is okay with playing the role of both hero and villain on-screen. Recalling the old times, Kabir said:

"Khoon Bhari Maang is the film I am most known for. The film was a superhit. I was shooting for another series, called Magnum PI, in Hawaii when I received a call from Rakesh Roshan. He offered me the role of a hero in his film. He then told me that the hero becomes the villain in the movie, and no other hero was willing to do this. He also shared that starring another villain would have no surprise element, which is why he told me only I could play hero and a villain."

Kabir Bedi reveals that he said 'yes' to Khoon Bhari Maang for Rekha

In the same interview, the veteran actor revealed that he said yes to Rakesh Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang for Rekha. He shared that it was a huge honour at the time to work opposite Rekha, as she was already an established actress. The actor shared that he didn’t want to lose the opportunity to work beside Rekha and thus re-routed his schedule in Hawaii and came to India for the shooting of Khoon Bhari Maang. In his words:

"The minute he told me Rekha was the heroine, I said yes. Back then, it was a huge honour working with her. She had won some awards for Umrao Jaan and was a brilliant actor, so I re-routed my schedule in Hawaii and came to shoot here. Rekha made that film what it is; she was the heart and soul of Khoon Bhari Maang. The film made a big impression on people. And I didn’t want to lose the opportunity of working with Rekha."

Kabir Bedi calls Rekha 'sensitive', and shares that the latter is a private person

Further in the interview, Kabir shared what obstructed him from socialising more with Rekha. He called the actress a sensitive person, who is extremely private. He shared that the actress was afraid of getting hurt and thus protects herself every time. He stated that Rekha's extremely private attitude made him stay away from socialising after work. In his words:

"We had mutual respect for one another. She is a private person; she guards her privacy. She is a very sensitive girl who is afraid of being hurt, so she protects herself, and I respect that. Even today, we meet very nicely, I embrace her, like her, but it was never like we sat down together and had lots of evenings talking about life. We would meet on set, speak there, but no great socialising after work."
