Sadly, their union wasn't meant to last, and Kabir opened up about the same recently.
Kabir and Protima Bedi tied the knot in 1969, following which they had two children, Pooja and Siddharth. Their relationship was rocky, but the couple wanted to make it work regardless, because of their kids. That was also when they decided to opt for an open marriage.
In a recent interview with Digital Commentary, Kabir opened up about how even that drastic move failed to save their marriage. Talking about his relationship with his first wife, Protima, he said:

While Kabir and Protima may have separated and divorced, the actor made it a point to fulfill all his responsibilities towards her. Kabir also made sure he was never absent from his kids, Pooja and Siddharth's lives. In the same interview, Kabir revealed that post his divorce, he had been working in the US.
