Kabir Khan and Mini Mathur are an embodiment of a love that has conquered all shackles and obstacles. Despite coming from different religious backgrounds, the duo have always managed to keep love at their first priority always, and have never let religion become an obstacle, thereby shedding sheer couple goals. And now, Kabir Khan opens up on his two pence behind his happy married life.
Kabir Khan tied the knot with Mini Mathur on February 28, 1998, a time when inter-faith marriages were quite rare to see. But how, despite all odds, the duo has stuck beside one another for more than 25 years is a happy mystery. Interestingly, what transpired as a pro factor to their union was the full support of their parents, who did not find religion any hindrance for the happiness of their children. In an interview with the Humans Of Bombay, Kabir Khan opened up about how Mini’s father motivated him for his marriage with his daughter. Elaborating how with a subtle example, her father cleared the air, he mentioned:
“Her father said the difference between Khan and Khanna is ‘na’, which means non applicable.”

Both as partners as well as parents, both Mini and Kabir have ensured that they always hold up a completely neutral stance when it comes to their kids. For the unversed, the duo are blessed with a son, Vivaan and a daughter, Sairah. Further, in his interview with the Humans Of Bombay, Kabir mentioned how just like himself, who had grown up in a secular environment, he ensures that both his children are never pushed to follow a specific religious path. In his words:
“The way we have brought up our children, is also the way how I was brought up. We never really tried to push them into a direction. We let them celebrate and follow whatever they have a passion for. Because I think that’s the way you find your path.”
One of the most common apprehensions for every girl in our culture has been that their choice of love is questioned or worse rejected by their parents. Mini Mathur felt the same apprehension when she went to share the truth about marrying a man from a different faith to her family. In the interview with Humans Of Bombay, Kabir Khan recollected how Mini’s family and especially her parents accepted him with open arms. In his words:
“Mini comes from a very traditional Mathur family. Religion was never really an issue and initially, Mini thought that there will be an issue in trying to convince her extended family but it’s just so beautiful how they all accepted me.”

In another instance, Kabir Khan proudly declared himself as an atheist when it comes to religion. Citing how his marriage was commenced with lots of rituals from both the families, he highlighted how they did so especially to make their parents and extended family happy about their union. Recalling his wedding moment and that the duo never fought because of religion, the talented filmmaker mentioned:
“We had a wedding, did rituals from both sides, more for the families than for us. I am actually an atheist so I don’t really truly believe in God and religion so it was very easy for me to sort of accept all that. We’ve had many fights, we’ve had lots of issues but religion has never been one.”
Another important factor that contributed to the happy marital life of Kabir Khan and Mini Mathur is the fact that both of them grew up in religiously secular backgrounds. In fact, for Kabir, his parents were an embodiment of an inter-faith couple themselves, so the question of stepping into something unusual was completely out of the way. In his words:
“Religion was never an issue. It was never a point of conflict. In our parents’ lives, I’ve never seen religion come up as a point of conflict. It was always a celebration of the best of both the religions have to offer. Diwali was celebrated with as much fervour as Eid, as was Christmas.”
