Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, and Preity Zinta, was released in 2006. The film, directed by Karan Johar, revolved around the unusual subjects of marital infidelity and dysfunctional relationships. Although KANK was a commercial hit, it received much flak from the audience for its unconventional storyline when it hit the theatres. Moreover, as per several reports, even Kajol rejected the film for the same reason.
Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Shah Rukh Khan appeared in the first episode of Koffee With Karan season 2, which aired in 2007. The trio discussed KANK on it. While they were talking about the backlash the film received due to its plot, Shah Rukh Khan said he was always worried about the story of the film. Rani said that people were always asking her why she left such a good husband in the film.

Moreover, Karan asked Kajol if she had a similar reason for not liking the story of the film. Kajol mentioned that as a woman she disagreed with the film and further explained how she felt that when a person gets married, they should have worked on it rather than cheating on their respective spouses. In her words:
“Yes, there were some points I disagreed with. As a woman, as you said before, I was like he’s such a great guy, why would you not stay with him? Why would you fall in love with him, and again, there is a plus side to it, and there’s a negative side to it, love is blind. I just didn’t agree with it, I feel when you get married, you should want to work on it. As a woman watching the film, I wish she had worked on it in some way.”
This clip was shared on the discussion platform, Reddit, and the people on the internet have similar thoughts to Kajol’s point of view. One user commented, “That entire movie is so senseless. Rani’s character is bitter with her husband, who has done nothing bad to her, but falls in love with a cheating husband who is also very insecure about his wife’s success.” Another one wrote, “Kjos obsession with whitewashing infidelity is weird.”

However, a section of the online community tried explaining the logic behind Rani’s character, ‘Maya’s infidelity in the films. A netizen said, “Maya only marries her husband because his family helped raise her, so she marries him from a place of gratitude, not love. It wasn’t really a love marriage, felt more arranged. Plus, you can be married (especially in arranged marriages this happens) but not feel attracted to your husband. I think that was the issue - Maya never felt attraction towards her husband and, at times, even repulsed. You shouldn’t have to stay in a marriage if you’re not attractive to your spouse even if they are ‘nice.’”
