'Kalki 2898 AD' Makers Accused Of Copying A 10-Yr-Old Artwork By A South Korean Artist, Get Slammed

Nag Ashwin's upcoming movie, Kalki 2898 AD is one of the most-awaited films of the year. The sci-fi action film will hit the screens on June 27, 2024. Recently, the trailer of Kalki 2898 AD was unveiled, leaving fans excited. However, some eagle-eyed netizens were quick to find similarities between the film and other Hollywood projects, including Dune and Mad Max: Fury Road. Now, the makers of Kalki 2898 AD have been accused of plagiarism by a concept artist.

South Korean concept artist accuses Kalki 2898 AD makers of plagiarism

On June 13, 2024, a South Korean concept artist, Sung Choi, took to his social media handles and accused the makers of Kalki 2898 AD of plagiarism. The concept illustrator and designer has worked with many production houses, including Marvel Studios, Disney, Warner Bros, and Netflix Animation. Choi called out Vyjayanthi Movies for allegedly copying his 10-year-old artwork in the opening scene of the trailer of Kalki 2898 AD. He shared a collage of his illustration and a still from the Kalki 2898 AD trailer and wrote:

“Unauthorized use of the artwork is a bad practice. This makes me question doing art in this lawless environment. @Kalki2898AD @VyjayanthiFilms #kalki2898ad.''

Netizens slam Kalki 2898 AD makers for copying the opening scene in the film

Soon after the post was shared on Reddit, it received mixed reactions from the netizens. The social media users expressed their anger at the makers and accused them of plagiarism. A user penned, "Ugh this is so disappointing as someone who is looking forward to the movie. Nag and the team should definitely address this and apologize to the original artist and make sure they do give due credit to people who deserve it. I’d hate for these kind of issues to potentially overshadow anything good about the movie."

About Kalki 2898 AD, made on a budget of Rs. 600 crore

For those who don't know, directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD is a film inspired by Hindu mythology. In the film, Prabhas plays the lead role of 'Bhairava', an avatar of the Hindu God, Vishnu. Apart from him, the film also features Amitabh Bachchan in the role of the immortal 'Ashwatthama'. Other stellar casts of the sci-fi thriller include Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani in the lead roles. If reports are to be believed, the film is said to be made on a whopping budget of Rs. 600 crore.

In the Kalki 2898 AD trailer, which was released on June 10, 2024, mom-to-be, Deepika Padukone was seen sporting a baby bump, and her fans couldn't keep calm. Not many know that, coincidentally, her character is pregnant in the film, and the story revolves around the baby that she is carrying in the film. In one of the segments of the trailer, Amitabh’s character 'Ashwatthama' informs Deepika's character, 'Padma' that her child will change the course of time, paving the way for a new era. However, it is worth mentioning that the actress shot the film before she announced her first pregnancy.
