Kalki Koechlin Recalls 'Difficult' Divorce With Anurag Kashyap 'Was Hurtful To See Him With Someone'

Kalki Koechlin and Anurag Kashyap are often called one of the rare ex-couples in Bollywood who have managed to stay on good terms after their divorce. They have publicly supported and praised each other. Moreover, the Gully Boy actress even attended the wedding of Anurag's daughter from his first marriage with Aarti Bajaj, Aaliyah Kashyap, with her now husband, Guy Hershberg and their daughter. However, Kalki recently opened up about how the divorce took an emotional toll on her, and the situation wasn't smooth initially after her divorce.

Kalki Koechlin reveals how her childhood could be the reason for her divorce

Kalki Koechlin sat down for an interview with Zoom and recalled how her childhood shaped her understanding of love and relationships. The actress shared that her parents had a bitter divorce when she was 13, and witnessing it as a teenager left a lasting impact on her mind. She continued that her parents used to not talk to each other properly and didn't share a loving bond, which was not easy to process at that age. Explaining how her parents' divorce could be a reason for her divorce from Anurag, Kalki said:

"My parents divorced when I was 13, and it was really bad. They were really nasty to each other, and it was like cold and mean growing up between them. That was very tough. Maybe that's why I'm divorced."

She acknowledged that growing up in a toxic household might have made her more prone to hampering her relationships. Kalki explained that witnessing such a hostile environment at home can make one more likely to believe that their relationship didn't work because they had witnessed a similar thing as a child. It can also make a person believe that they won't be able to manage things when it gets difficult. However, for the Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara actress, consciousness and therapy played a vital role in making her accept her parents' divorce and overcome the negative loop of thoughts.

Kalki Koechlin shares that it was difficult for her to see Anurag with someone else after their divorce

In the same conversation, Kalki Koechlin recalled how the time after their divorce was challenging for her and Anurag. Things became worse, which made them decide that they would stay away because it was difficult for them to see each other moving on. It quickly brought their old memories together. However, the distance helped them overcome the feelings and maintain a cordial bond. In her words:

"The first few years after the divorce were not easy for us. Then came a point when we were like 'we need to stay out of each other's lives' because it was hurtful to see the other person with somebody else. Just the reminders are so strong. It does take a few years. We didn't get to it immediately, and distance helped. Now we are in a good place and we are able to catch up once in a while."
