Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are two of the most famous icons of the South Indian film industry, with their careers spanning several decades. They have acted in a number of films across different languages. Interestingly, the two actors frequently shared screen space early on in their careers. However, after sharing the screen-space in Geraftaar in 1985, Kamal never shared the screen with Rajinikanth.
Kamal Haasan worked with Rajinikanth in nearly 16 films before deciding not to work together. Recently, in an interview with The Indian Express, Kamal revealed the reason behind the same. He shared that his pairing with Rajinikanth won't be as new. Also, they don't consider each other as competitors because they had the same mentor. However, Kamal said that they have an open competition, but are not envious.there is an open competition but no envy. He was quoted as saying:
"It's not a new combination. We have done many films together. Then we decided not to work together. We are not like two competitors. We had the same mentor (Tamil filmmaker K Balachander). Unlike any other place, the competition is there, openly. But there's no envy and it's two different paths."

In the past, often, when two actors decided not to work together or competed with one another, they used to make unpleasant remarks against each other. However, when Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth decided not to work together, they took another decision with it. The two agreed that they would never make snide remarks about each other.
A few days ago, Kamal Haasan appeared in Pinkvilla Masterclass and shared that he was offered the opportunity to play the antagonist in Rajinikanth starrer 2Point0. However, he turned down the role because he wanted to play the protagonist for some more time. Kamal added that he meets Rajinikanth every once in ten years, and they always discuss working together on a project.

Recently, Kamal Haasan starred in Nag Ashwin's film, Kalki 2898 AD alongside Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone. The sci-fi film premiered worldwide on June 27, 2024 and has received a lot of appreciation. Recently, Rajinikanth watched the film and appreciated the film and its crew. He shared a post on X about it. Rajinikanth penned:
