Kangana Ranaut as an actress has established her name in the industry through her work and also for her reputation of never mincing her words. After sharing her commentary and opinion on contemporary issues, the actress also donned the hat of a politician and won the Member of Parliament (MP) seat from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh as a BJP candidate. However, recently she opened up about her life as a politician and said how it is an 'expensive hobby'.
Talking about her experience of working as a politician, Kangana Ranaut said to Times Now, "I always say that politics is a very expensive hobby". When questioned about the use of the word 'hobby', the actress turned politician said that as an honest MP, one cannot have it as a profession. A job is needed to sustain oneself, stated Kangana. The MP from Mandi stated:
"If you are an MP, you can’t have it as a profession because you need a job. If you are an honest person."
Talking about her salary, Kangana said that the salary she gets is spent on maintaining a cook and a driver. She also said that expenses are in lakhs, especially considering that most places are 300-400km away. Kangana stated that after deducting all these expenses, she is left with Rs. 50,000 salary as an MP. To note, reports suggest that the salary of an MP in India is around Rs. 1-1.5 lakhs. Kangana further added that since politics is an expensive hobby, many MPs have jobs or businesses. However, the actress expressed that like Javed Akhtar, who was a Rajya Sabha MP from 2010-16, worked in Bollywood and was also a politician, she will do the same. Kangana was quoted as saying:
“I understand that whatever salary you get here to maintain your cook and driver, what you are left with is actually just Rs. 50,000-60,000, that’s your salary as an MP. The expenses are in lakhs because every place is at least 300-400 kms away. You must understand that it is a very expensive hobby. You need a job. A lot of MPs have businesses, and they are working as lawyers. They have come before me, like Javed Akhtar ji, they kept doing their work, you got to work."
Kangana Ranaut won the MP seat from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, with a BJP ticket. However, she was not given any portfolio to handle. When asked in the interview whether she expected to be a minister, the actress said that she thought she should have gotten a ministry. Kangana said that she had done a lot for the party, and her political campaign was also quite long; moreover, she also won in a difficult constituency. Hence, the actress turned MP expressed that she thought she would get a portfolio and become a Union Minister. Kangana said:
“The kind of profile that I come from, I am a filmmaker, writer, author. I also have the fourth-highest civilian honour, I am a Padma Bhushan. So in that context, I just felt that I have done a lot for the party and I have also won a very difficult seat. It was a very long campaign for me because my voting was also in the last phase, so I expected to get a portfolio. I thought I should have got it."
What are your thoughts on Kangana Ranaut claiming that she is left with a salary of Rs. 50,000 as an MP?
