Karachi-Based Theatre Group Brings Indian Epic 'Ramayana' To Stage, Netizens Applaud The Adaptation

South Asia is, without a doubt, one of the most culturally rich and diverse regions, with countries bunched together through geographical boundaries as well as psychological similarities. Be it through a shared history, art, culture, music, or food, there are countless elements of commonality for people across the border to bond over. While political pressure and societal prejudices have time and again created a sense of alienation and animosity among these countries, there are still many instances where this shared love for art and culture rises above the surface tension. Such was the instance when a Karachi-based theatre group, Mauj, stunned its audiences by performing an adaptation of the Indian epic, Ramayana

A Karachi-based theatre group, Mauj performed Ramayana

The performance was staged at the Karachi Arts Council, which is known for promoting projects of innovation, and cross-cultural dialogue in Pakistan. The play was directed by Yogeshwar Karera, and it has already gained widespread attention, not just because it’s an adaptation of Ramayana, brought to a Pakistani stage, but because of the plays compelling narrative, visually rich presentation, and the use of artificial intelligence to create an immersive experience for the audience. The production was a collaboration between Mauj and the School of Visual & Performing Arts (SOVAPA) and ran until July 13, 2025. b

Mauj’s Ramayana bridges the gap between the two countries through tolerance

What sets this rendition of Ramayana apart was just how beautifully and respectfully it portrayed a culturally rich and significant work of literature like Ramayana to the stage and also integrated the innovative elements such as lighting, immersive sound design, and AI-generated visuals, which in the end acted like a bridge between the ancient storyline and modern experience. Director Yogeshwar Karera, while explaining his vision, could be quoted as saying:

“To me, bringing the Ramayana to life on stage is a visual treat and shows that Pakistani society is more tolerant than it is often given credit for.”

Mauj’s Ramayana consisted of stellar performances and has become a critically acclaimed project

The characters in Ramayana have very distinct roles assigned to them through which the epic moves forward, on the surface one might assume they have key characteristics that define their whole arc, example being, 'Ram' is poised and calm, 'Lakshman' is somewaht hot headed and impulsive, but it’s the nuanced storytelling that portrayed them more than what could be seen from the surface. While one crosses the ocean to get back to his wife, the other leaves her behind for his duty; things that could be seen as contrasting to their moulded personality. Yet, both of them suffer similarly from the longing.

To portray such an immensely layered, character, one must be very sensitive and open-minded, and has to break free from cultural differences and societal norms. The cast of Mauj’s Ramayana was successful to do so and have been praised for their sincere and powerful performances. Rana Kazmi, who plays the role of 'Sita', and is being celebrated for her acting as well as for the show’s success, spoke about her experience and said:

“Transforming the epic into an immersive experience was both challenging and magical.”

Critics have also responded positively to this adaptation. Well-known art and film critic, Omair Alavi, described the narrative as 'top class', noting that Ramayana is a story that resonates with millions globally. He lauded the production for respecting the source material while making it accessible to contemporary audiences.

Mauj’s Ramayana has proven that theatre and art can promote cultural dialogue

The adaptation of Ramayana in a predominantly Muslim country like Pakistan is not just artistic but symbolic. It reflects a desire of ordinary people to embrace shared histories, foster understanding, and challenge narratives of division that controls the majority; the people do not want hate or separation. As it is rightfully said, art doesn’t see boundaries, neither does it see difference, and projects such as this encourage cross-cultural conversations, which are essential in today’s fragmented world.

Audiences from diverse backgrounds had filled the seats for this adaptation, and social media is buzzing with praise. The official Instagram page of SOVAPA shared behind-the-scenes glimpses and vibrant on-stage moments, generating further interest and engagement from the audience. Everyone hopes to see more of such projects that promote harmony and celebration of culture, more in the future.

In a world often divided by differences, the Mauj’s Ramayana is a reminder of the sheer simplicity of storytelling to unite people be it through culture, age or geographical boundaries.
