Filmmaker, Karan Johar has given many blockbuster films to the Hindi film industry, and his contributions are praiseworthy. After receiving immense praise for his first directorial, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, KJo proved his mettle with the film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Directed by Karan Johar, the 2001 movie, K3G starred Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kajol, and Hrithik Roshan in the lead roles. With such a stellar cast, the film turned out to be the biggest Bollywood hit of 2001.
In a recent conversation with designer, Prabal Gurung on the Gold House YouTube channel, Karan Johar recalled how he received threats from the underworld after the release of the film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. So, he fled the country and jetted off to London for some time as his mother, Hiroo wanted him to stay under the radar. During their stay in the UK, they went to watch the film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with a crowd and were surprised to see how the audience couldn't stop weeping throughout the film.

Not just this, Karan Johar also received an appreciation call from producer, Aditya Chopra, who congratulated him on the massive success of the film, KKHH, and even said that he could buy his dream house. Karan was so encouraged by the film's success that he told his father, late Yash Johar what he wanted to do next. Recalling how his father reacted to his idea about making the film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, KJo said:
“The film was my first success, and coming back home, I couldn’t realise what had happened. I started writing my second. One morning, I woke up, I looked at my dad and said, ‘I want to work with Mr Bachchan, Mrs Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor’. My father looked at me thinking ‘daure pad jaate hain’. He said, ‘Beta, you should make one film at a time’. I said, ‘They’re all in one film’.”
Karan Johar further revealed that he went to each actor's house on the same day to offer them the film. He shared that he first visited the Bachchans as they were seniors and added that he left their house after meeting Amitabh Bachchan. Later, after driving around for a few minutes, he returned to their home for a meeting with Jaya Bachchan. Revealing the reason behind the same, KJo said that he did that because he wanted to treat Jaya as an individual, rather than as a part of a package deal. Karan also shared that while Shah Rukh agreed immediately, Kajol got emotional upon hearing the script. Kareena Kapoor, on the other hand, only wanted to know about her role and reacted:
“This is going to be an iconic part.”

There is no denying that we have not witnessed an iconic film like K3G in Bollywood, and Karan Johar once revealed why it's so difficult to make an iconic film like that again. During his appearance at the live show, My Movie Life, Karan opened up about the changes in the Indian film industry and mentioned how it was practically and economically impossible for a film to have such a stellar cast. In his words:
“No one can afford a movie like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ today. Getting one actor in a frame is so expensive, imagine six of them. It is a pity because it will be such a big treat to the viewers to see so many actors in one frame. I hope, wish, and pray that it happens. Economically it is tough, but we should get the phenomena of multi-starrers back as the audience will get more for the price of one.”
