Breaking the orthodox Kapoor tradition of not marrying actresses, which was followed by the clan for two generations, the blue-eyed boy Randhir Kapoor fell in love with the doe-eyed beauty and his Kal Aaj Aur Kal co-star, Babita. Somewhere around 1969 began the topsy-turvy relationship of Randhir and Babita. What started off as a friendship manifested into a secret romantic relationship, which was kept under the wraps for two years. Knowing the Kapoor family tradition, Babita asked Randhir to either marry her or dump her. In the filmiest way possible, Randhir signed Babita for his directorial debut film, Kal Aaj Aur Kal in the year 1971, which also had Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. Putting on a patriarchal condition for their marriage, the Kapoors agreed to Randhir Kapoor and Babita’s relationship. Babita had to quit her acting career post marrying Randhir and on November 6, 1971, the lovebirds finally became each other’s ‘forever’ in a big fat Punjabi wedding. Things were going smooth in their relationship and they were blessed with firstborn, a daughter, Karisma Kapoor in 1974. But the marital life was no more a cakewalk for the couple when his career took a dip and he indulged in drinking and merrymaking. In 1981, Randhir and Babita embraced parenthood again with the arrival of their second daughter, Kareena Kapoor. Soon their relationship went beyond their control and they both separated.

On Babita’s 70th birthday, Randhir Kapoor had revealed why they haven’t divorced each other, in a media interaction. He was quoted as saying, "Divorce for what? Why should we head for divorce? I don’t intend to get married again, and nor does she. She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late, which was something she didn’t like. And I didn’t want to live the way she wanted, and she couldn’t accept me as I am, though it was a love marriage. So, it’s okay. We had two lovely children to look after. She brought them up in the best way and they have excelled in their career. What else I could have asked for as a father?"
In another interview, when asked if Babita still has a special place in his heart, Randhir Kapoor had said, “She’s a crucial part of my life. She has given me two lovely kids. We are all grown up people, and we preferred to stay separately, [but] we are not enemies.” Elaborating on the fact that despite living under different roofs nothing much has changed between them, Randhir had stated, “We still meet each other quite often. We go out, have dinners together, meet at family parties, and she’s always there at family events, whether it’s at Rishi’s place or my house.” (Also Read: Taimur Ali Khan's Latest Casual Outfit Proves He Loves Dinosaurs Like Every Kid, Video Inside)
