Karnataka Female Judge Blasted Woman's Rs. 6L Per Month Alimony Plea, 'Let Her Earn..Not On Husband'

Divorces in parallel line with weddings have been a major issue at the current time. While as of 2025, the divorce rate in India is reportedly 1 per cent, which is relatively lower than other countries, significant increases could be noticed by 30-40 per cent in urban areas. Along with divorce, comes another major topic, alimony. Alimony is court-ordered financial support that one spouse has to provide to the other during the divorce or separation for maintenance. 

Karnataka-based female judge gave it back to a woman who requested Rs. 6 lakh per month from her estranged husband

Alimony has been extensively discussed due to its misuse. A few months ago, a Bengaluru-based techie, Atul Subhash took the extreme step of suicide because of the pressure heived upon him for the alimony, which raised the question about men's lives and safety as well. In this particular case, a judge was dragged as well for her demand of a bribe. Amid alimony being a hot topic of discussion, an old video of a Karnataka judge made rounds on social media. It was her straightforward reply to a demand of Rs. 6 lakh monthly alimony of a wife that won hearts.

In a video, which is dated a few months back, the Karnataka judge was seen slamming the woman's advocate who was trying to secure a monthly alimony of Rs. 6,16,300 from her ex-husband. The advocate was seen stating that the woman needed Rs. 4-5 lakh for her physiotherapy and medicines, while for the basic needs such as bangles, sandals, slippers, and watches, she needed Rs. 50K, while other Rs. 60K she claimed to have needed for food and other expenses. The advocate also made it clear that the husband was already paying for their children's school and tuition fees.

As shocking as it is to hear, the Karnataka-based judge's reaction was something similar. She was shocked to hear that the woman asked for Rs. 6 lakh for monthly maintenance. She also argued that the husband can get an amount of Rs. 10 crore but it doesn't mean he would have to spend half on his estranged wife when the advocate talked about the luxurious life that the husband lives. The judge further questioned who even spends Rs. 6 lakhs every month on the matter. She further asked the advocate to ask her client to earn herself if she wants to spend that much amount she has demanded from her husband as alimony. The Karnataka judge blasted the women's advocate by saying:

"Please don’t tell the court that this is what a person requires. Six lakh, sixteen thousand, three hundred per month? Does anybody spend this much? A single lady for herself? Well, if she wants to spend, let her earn. Not on the husband. “You have no other responsibility of the family. You don’t have to take care of the children."

The judge added that the court considered granting some amount to the woman but after looking at the expenditure she had made, there's nothing to grant. To this, the advocate further argued that it was a reasonable amount. The judge added that the court will need the actual numbers rather than lakhs, or else the application will be dismissed. The Karnataka judge further said that it left her surprised about the headings she gave up on the expenditure amount. The husband's advocate further argued with a memo and the judge asked her to file it through an affidavit to send a clear message that no exploitation in the process of the court would be entertained.
