Singer Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband and famous talent manager, Brandon Blackstock, passed away on August 7, 2025, after his long battle with cancer. Brandon was a popular name in the entertainment world, managing artists like Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, and Carly Pearce. He was 48 at the time of his death and had been battling cancer for the past three years.
Before marrying Kelly, Brandon Blackstock was married to Melissa Ashworth from 2001 to 2012, with whom he had two children. After his divorce from Melissa, Brandon went on to marry Kelly Clarkson in 2013. While everything looked rosy, the couple faced numerous issues in their marriage. In 2020, Brandon and Kelly split, and their divorce was finalised in 2022.
Soon after the news of Brandon Blackstock’s death surfaced, people started digging into details about his divorce from Kelly, which led to a custody battle and the hefty alimony paid by Kelly as spousal support.
Kelly and Brandon stayed married for seven years; however, it was Kelly who filed for a divorce in 2020, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’. However, after the couple was granted a divorce, Kelly revealed in a podcast that she was unhappy in her marriage and felt stuck with Brandon. Not just this, Brandon was also her manager, who looked after her work, so the professional and personal lives got mixed up.
The couple reportedly had a legal battle over finances and children’s custody. In March 2022, the two settled their divorce battle as Kelly reportedly paid Brandon a lump sum amount of USD 1,326,161. She was also ordered to pay Brandon a monthly amount of USD 150,000, which was later reduced to USD 115,000 after a lot of negotiations. Additionally, Kelly was bound to pay USD 45,601 monthly for their children, River Rose and Remington Alexander till they reach 18.

While the legal battle was on, the couple also fought for the custody of their kids, River Rose and Remington Alexander. Both Kelly and Brandon wanted custody of their children, and it was difficult as the ex-couple stayed in different places. The court intervened, and the children’s primary physical custody went to Kelly. The court granted the children to stay with Kelly, while Brandon was awarded visitation rights.
Despite going through a public divorce, Kelly did not let it affect her career. She channelised her strength to connect with her fans. During her divorce, Kelly appeared as a judge in the show, The Voice and instantly became everyone’s favourite. However, it was Brandon’s distasteful comment to her which broke her.
The Grammy winner claimed in court that her former husband and manager, Brandon, thought that she wasn’t ‘sexy’ enough to appear on The Voice as a coach. As per her, Brandon claimed that The Voice was looking for someone sexy and quoted pop queen, Rihanna as an example.
After her divorce from Brandon, Kelly was completely broken as she knew the importance of her children's relationship with their father. She not only tried to keep their bond intact but also never spoke ill about Brandon to her kids. Kelly, who had been performing live shows, cancelled all her upcoming shows when she learned about Brandon’s failing health.
When Brandon passed away on August 7, 2025, Kelly was devastated for her kids. Despite their divorce, she maintained a cordial bond with him. According to a report by PEOPLE, a source close to Kelly had shared:
"When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake. Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She’s been devastated for the kids."
