Kerala Woman Commits Suicide Over Dowry, Kills 1.5-Year-Old Daughter Before Dying, 'I Was...'

Dowry and marriages have been interconnected with each other for ages, and a married woman facing harassment due to dowry issues is nothing new. However, in today’s society, we also get to hear many shocking incidents related to it. A heartbreaking case has recently come to light, where the 32-year-old Kerala woman had to commit suicide after facing much harassment in her household. This also has a heartwrenching part. The 32-year-old Vipanjika Mani, who was a native of Kollam district in Kerala, had a little daughter, who was just 1.5 years old, whom she murdered before committing suicide.

Vipanjika’s mother, Shailaja, lodged a complaint against her in-laws

According to the FIR by Kundara police in Kollam, Kerala, on July 8, 2025, Vipanjika was found dead along with her 1.5-year-old daughter in Al Nahda, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Vipanjika’s husband, Nidheesh, is the first accused, followed by his sister, Neetu and her father-in-law. According to the complaint lodged by Vipanjika’s mother, Shailaja, the victim was tortured both mentally and physically due to dowry-related issues. The complaint stated that the 32-year-old Vipanjika’s hair was shaved to make her look ugly, and this was done just because the victim was fair, while her husband and in-laws were dark in complexion.

It also stated that the victim was handed over a divorce notice, when she asked her husband, Nidheesh, about his extramarital affairs. The three accused have been charged with Sections 85 (cruelty by husband or any relative of husband) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Speaking to Manorama Online, Shailaja said:

"Neetu is the reason behind my daughter's death. She and their father, Mohanan, tortured my daughter. They even cut her hair. She never told me anything, saying I would get upset. Look at my state now."

Vipanjika Mani wrote a suicide note accusing her husband and in-laws

Vipanjika, before taking such a drastic step, killed her 1.5-year-old daughter. According to a report by NDTV, the little one died from airway obstruction, possibly by a pillow. It is suspected that Vipanjika, murdered her daughter, just before committing suicide. She also wrote a handwritten note and posted it on her Facebook, before her tragic death by suicide. In the note, she has accused her husband, sister-in-law and father-in-law. The victim wrote that she was sexually assaulted by her father-in-law, and when she addressed the matter to her husband, Nidheesh, he told her that he had married her for his father, too.

According to Mathrubhumi, Vipanjika was a working woman and worked as a filing clerk at a private company in Dubai for the past seven years. She was married to Nidheesh for over four years. Taking to her Facebook, Vipanjika shared a long suicide note and addressed the tortures that she had to go through. She revealed how her in-laws harassed her for dowry and tortured her for the money that she got as a salary.

"I used to silently endure their harassment. They used to say the wedding was not grand enough, the dowry was insufficient, and that it didn’t include a car. They called me homeless, broke, and said I lived by begging for money. Even though they had enough money, they harassed me for my salary. He used to watch certain videos and used to demand that I do those in bed. I was tortured and beaten up like a dog. I can't take it anymore. Don't spare them."
