Aamir Khan is one of the prominent actors in Bollywood. With his power-class performance, the actor has been winning the hearts of his fans since the time he debuted in the industry. For the unversed, Aamir will be next seen in the movie, Time Machine, which is slated to release in 2025. Apart from his professional life, Aamir's personal life has always been a topic of discussion. It was back in 1996 when Aamir got married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two kids, Ira and Junaid. However, it was after 16 years of their marital bliss that Reena and Aamir decided to part ways for the reasons best known to them. After that, Aamir tied the knot with Kiran Rao. However, many people believe that it was Kiran and Aamir's romantic involvement that ended the actor's marriage to Reena. And now, Kiran opened up about the same.
For those who don't know, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao first met on the set of Lagaan, which was released back in 2002. It was one year after that film's release when Reena and Aamir parted ways, making people believe that Kiran and the actor's romantic relationship was the reason behind it. However, in a recent interview with Zoom, Kiran Rao denied it all and mentioned that during Lagaan, she barely spoke to Aamir, and she was dating someone else back then.

In the same interview, Kiran Rao added that she had zero contact with him after 3-4 years of Lagaan. Kiran shared that it was during the shoot of the movie, Swades when she and the actor got reconnected, and then they started going out in 2004. Kiran can be quoted as saying:
“Lots of people think that Aamir and I connected on Lagaan, we absolutely didn’t. Aamir and I got together during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at the time. We had just shot a couple of commercials with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coke and that is where Aamir and I reconnected. 3-4 years after Lagaan. I wasn’t in touch with him. In fact, on Lagaan, I barely spoke to him. I was actually seeing somebody else during Lagaan. When Aamir and I started going out in 2004, everybody thought that this started when we were shooting for Lagaan and this caused the divorce, which was not the fact.”
In the same interview, Kiran Rao mentioned that when someone marries a person who was already married before, he/she often brings baggage to his current relationship from his past, and to deal with it, couple's counselling is a good choice. Kiran mentioned that she and Aamir took couple's counselling, and it was helpful for them. In Kiran's words:
"When you marry someone, who has been in another relationship, there is a baggage that you bring that will affect your relationship. I strongly recommend couple’s counselling. Aamir and I did couple’s counselling. It becomes a neutral ground where you talk about your needs, how you see the other person and that was very beneficial to me. It helped that Aamir and I agreed that we both have to be honest with each other, whatever be the case.”
Earlier, in an interview with Puja Talwar, Kiran Rao shared that she and Aamir used to have several disagreements between them but they never had any big fights. The filmmaker also mentioned that she and Aamir Khan respect each other a lot, and they understand one another, too. Talking more about the same, Kiran added that she and Aamir had their fair share of struggles, but nothing vaguely antagonistic had ever happened.

Despite being divorced from Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao shares an adorable bond with the actor's family, as well as with his first wife, Reena Dutta. Earlier, in an interview with The Week, Kiran remarked that it comes to her naturally, and she and Reena both like each other for the kind of human beings they are. Kiran also mentioned that she often hangs out with Reena and Aamir's cousin, even if the actor isn't there, and they all live in the same housing society.
