It’s been three decades since global icon, Selena Quintanilla left the world. For the unversed, Selena, popularly known as 'Queen of Tejano' was tragically killed by her friend, Yolanda Saldivar in the mid-1990s. Well, now that a documentary, Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy has been released to celebrate Selena’s success, take a look at her killer, Yolanda’s life, who is currently in jail and was recently denied parole.
Selena's death in 1995 shocked the entire world, as she was becoming more and more successful day-by-day. And Yolanda Saldivar was a close friend of the singer, Selena, and also the president of Selena’s fan club. Nobody expected that someday, she would become the reason for Selena's death. For the unversed, the reason behind the death was financial problems and broken trust.

At that time, Selena's family got to know that Yolanda had been stealing money from the fan club. When the singer and her family confronted her, she got scared. Later, Selena met Yolanda at a motel in Corpus Christi to collect important business papers, and that day turned out to be the last day of Selena as Yolanda shot her.

After killing the global icon, Selena 1995, Yolanda was given a life sentence, but she was allowed to ask for parole after 30 years. For the unversed, parole is a chance for prisoners to ask permission to be released. Her first chance came in March 2025. However, when she applied for parole in 2025, the Texas parole board refused her request. The main reason behind the denial was that the board believed Yolanda's crime was too serious to be released. The board also told her to wait for five years before trying again. And Yolanda can next apply for parole in 2030.

Recently, a documentary, Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy was released, which tells the story and legacy of Selena. The documentary is released by Isabel Castro and produced by Selena’s siblings Suzette and A.B. Quintanilla. For those who don't know, the documentary was released on November 17, 2025, on Netflix. Selena Quintanilla was a bright, warm singer from Texas, who started performing with her family band, Los Dinos as a child. Soon, she went on to become one of the most loved singers of that time. A year before her death, she even won a Grammy award. Some of her famous songs and albums included Amor Prohibido, Como La Flor, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Dreaming of You, Disco Medley, I Could Fall In Love, Techno Cumbia and more. Her tragic and unexpected death left millions of people heartbroken.
