The Euphoria actress shared a video of the same on January 27, 2026. Dressed in black cargo pants and a hoodie, Sydney was filmed scaling the structure, specifically the letter 'H', to drape a clothesline of lingerie across it. It was a marketing move to promote the launch of her new lingerie brand, Syrn, which high-profile investors, including Jeff Bezos, reportedly backed. As the activity raised concerns about being illegal, the LAPD shared whether the actress could face charges.

Did Sydney Sweeney have permission to hang lingerie on the Hollywood sign?

Sydney Sweeney did not have permission to hang lingerie on the iconic Hollywood Sign. While her production team reportedly obtained a permit from FilmLA to shoot near the landmark, it did not authorise climbing, touching, or physically altering the sign in any way. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which manages the trademark and commercial use of the sign, confirmed that it granted no such license to the Anyone But You actress and was unaware of the stunt beforehand. They told TMZ:

"There was no permission granted to do this, as is required."

What legal trouble could Sydney Sweeney face if a case was filed against her?

Sydney Sweeney could potentially face misdemeanour charges in Los Angeles following the late-night promotional stunt for her upcoming lingerie brand, Syrn. A misdemeanour is typically punishable by up to 6 months in county jail and/or a fine of up to USD 1,000. While The Housemaid actress reportedly secured a permit for touching or scaling the Hollywood sign. Under California Penal Code 602, entering the restricted area surrounding the sign is a crime.

Additionally, authorities may pursue vandalism charges under Penal Code 594 for attaching objects (lingerie) to the structure and reportedly leaving several behind. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce holds the intellectual property rights to the sign and stated that any commercial use requires a specific license, which Sydney Sweeney's production did not obtain. Amid the growing buzz around the actress' latest promotional stunt, the concerned authorities revealed whether she will actually face charges for her actions.

On January 26, 2026, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) shared whether Sydney Sweeney could face legal trouble for hanging lingerie in the Hollywood sign. The LAPD told Fox News Digital and other outlets that there was no active investigation into Sydney Sweeney following her viral promotional stunt. They clarified the reason for the same, saying that the Christy actress did not commit any unlawful activity and thus no case had been filed against her. An LAPD representative was quoted by Fox News Digital as saying:
