Late Liam Payne's GF On His Addiction And Mental Health, Reveals How She Got The News Of His Death

We all remember the sweet Liam Payne from 2010, The X Factor, who won over the audience with his sunshine smile and soulful vocals. He was a member of one of the top boy bands, One Direction, and was often dubbed as 'Daddy Direction' for his sense of responsibility and calmness. However, there is a side of fame that the world has blissfully ignored, which often comes with a looming shadow of struggles and addictions. In a recent conversation with Jay Shetty, Liam's girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, discussed the same topic and shared how the actor struggled on a personal level.

In a recent conversation with Jay Shetty, Kate Cassidy opened up about Liam Payne's struggle with mental health and addiction. When asked about Liam's struggle with addiction, Kate revealed that Liam had been struggling with his mental health and addictions for a long time. She added that while he didn't want to give in to them, it was like something in his brain would tick, and he couldn't help himself. She added:

"He was pretty open about it. It was definitely something that he didn't want, and if he could have chosen to be sober for the rest of his life, he would have, but it's just something that I at first didn't fully understand. I don't have any family history of mental health issues, so at the beginning of our relationship, when he was struggling, in my mind I was like, 'Can't you just not do that?' But it's not easy at all. It's like their brain is wired to pick up that beer or do that thing, and once I realised that, it made so much more sense." 

Kate Cassidy reflects on dating someone with addiction

Kate recalled her time with Liam and revealed that the Heart Meet Break singer was a massive homebody. She shared that he wouldn't want to get out of bed in the mornings and have a lazy day. She, on the other hand, didn't like being homebound, so finding that balance was a major adjustment in their relationship. She added that understanding that things didn't have to go one way played a pivotal role in their relationship. Recalling an instance from their vacation in Greece, she stated:

"A couple of months before Liam passed away, we were in Greece, and he was posting on his Snapchat, and he was having one of those days where he didn't want to do anything, and I said to him, 'All right, get dressed. We're going to the beach.' He didn't want to go, and I remember saying to him, 'No, we are going. It's a 5-minute walk and then if you want to come back to the hotel room, we'll come back.'"

Kate Cassidy recalled she received a lot of hate the next day because Liam had posted a video saying that his girlfriend dragged him out. While he was joking, the fan base didn't understand what was actually going on. She added that she only wanted to help Liam, but she was young and now she realises that only they could have helped themselves. She shared that one can support their partner, but it is not up to them to cure somebody. She further stated how there were days when Liam would take five steps ahead and days when he would take three steps backwards. Despite being a strong person, his struggles were overwhelming for him.

Kate Cassidy recalls finding out about Liam Payne's passing

Kate also talked about Liam Payne's demise during her chat with Jay Shetty. She recalled that day she was at home with their dog, Nala, when she got a call from Liam's friend, asking if she was okay. She revealed that she had heard that he had fallen from the balcony, but she thought it was either a rumour or that he had broken a bone. However, she never imagined what actually had happened. She shared that eventually she started feeling anxious and called that friend back.

"I call his friend back and I say, 'Have you heard any updates? I'm really confused, like what's going on?' and he was like, 'The only update I've heard is that Liam's dead. And in that moment, I still couldn't believe it...His friend eventually called me back and said Liam's not here anymore, and I kept saying, 'No, no, no, he's here. Are you sure? He's probably just, he broke a bone; a bone or a rib or broke something.'"
