Pratyusha Bannerjee was one of the most adored and popular divas in the television industry. She rose to fame with her powerful portrayal of the child bride, ‘Anandi’ in the hit and longest-running television show, Balika Vadhu. Thereafter, she made an impactful performance in the reality show, Bigg Boss 7, where the fans saw an up close and never-seen-before personality of the diva. However, when her loyal fans and the audience were gearing up to see more of her performances at the top of her career, which shocked everyone with her death, as she reportedly committed suicide in April 2016, at the mere age of 24. Interestingly, things took an ugly turn when her boyfriend, Rahul Raj Singh was levied with charges of abetment to suicide by the late actress’ parents, post which he was arrested and a court case filed against him.
The case of Pratyusha Bannerjee’s suicide has still not been offered a resolution, and as a result, her boyfriend, Rahul Raj Singh hasn’t been offered a clean chit yet. Back in August 2023, Rahul had submitted a plea to the Mumbai session court, requesting his discharge from the case. However, according to recent reports, the court has rejected his plea for absolvement. The court, after hearing evidences from various prima facie reports, had concluded that the absence of any suicide note by the late actress, accusing him of her death isn’t a sufficient proof to clear Rahul of any charges.

And now, in an interaction with ETimes, Rahul reacted to the court’s judgement and mentioned some details about the kind of relationship he had with the late actress. Responding to the judge’s mention of him supplying drugs to the late actress, when she was in disturbed mental health, Rahul said:
“People in the industry knew that Pratyusha started drinking before I entered her life. In fact, I would stop her from consuming drugs. I am ready to face the trial.”
In the same interview, Rahul spoke about being misrepresented on the grounds of taking money from the late actress and controlling all her finances. He mentioned that on the contrary, it was Pratyusha’s parents, who remotely controlled her finances and manhandled them. Moreover, he mentioned that due to the case, he hasn’t been able to land up on any projects and work, since the industry has sidelined him for the past seven years. An excerpt of his revelation can be quoted as:
“I haven’t taken a single penny from her. She was upset with her parents, as she felt that they used all her money. Her mother was party to every loan taken by her, and Pratyusha was inundated with abusive calls from lenders. Her parents took a huge loan in their daughter’s name to support their lavish lifestyle. I have been suffering for the past seven years. My career is on hold, as the industry seems to have sidelined me.”

In one of his earlier interactions with Aaj Tak, Rahul Raj Singh spoke about Pratyusha Bannerjee’s suicide and shared how he did not think it was one. The actor recalled how she was often depressed about her parent’s debt, and added that she would often send prank videos of suicide to scare him. He then claimed that perhaps, on that fatal night of April 1, 2016, Pratyusha's foot must have slipped while making such hanging videos, which led to such an incident.
