Laura Dahlmeier, Double Olympic Champion Dies While Climbing In Pakistan, Here's What Happened

Laura Dahlmeier was a two-time Olympic biathlon champion who hailed from Germany, and passed away on July 28, 2025, at the age of 31 in Pakistan. Laura's life was cut short in a tragic mountaineering accident that took place at Laila Peak, as per a statement released by her management team. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the ill-fated tragedy with Laila occurred during midday at Laila Peak, an elevation of around 18,700 feet.

What had happened to Laura Dahlmeier?

Laila was in the Hushe Valley, which is situated in the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan. She was ascending with her mountaineering partner when she got hit by an unanticipated rockfall. Owing to bad weather, a rescue aircraft could not reach the scene. Laila, who was a retired German biathlete, was hit by falling rocks on July 28, 2025, at midday local time while she was climbing the Laila Peak located in the Karakoram mountain range. Her team released a note that spoke on how Laura enriched the lives of all with her warm and straightforward manner.  A part of her note read:

"She showed us that it pays to stand up for one's dreams and goals and to always stay true to oneself. We are grateful from the bottom of our hearts, dear Laura, for allowing us to be part of your life. The memories we share give us strength and courage to continue our journey. Farewell to a wonderful person! She showed us that it’s worth standing up for your dreams and goals and always staying true to yourself."

Laura Dahlmeier had written a will that she wanted her body to be left in the mountains

At the end of the note, Laura's team expressed their gratitude for the impact she had on people's hearts. The comment section of Laura's tribute post has been turned off while a picture from one of her peak climbs was shared along with the same. A spokesperson of the Gilgit-Baltistan government named, Faizullah Faraq shared that two rescue teams confirmed the demise of Laura at the site. Her representatives had also shared the news with Germany's Die Welt newspaper. Laila Peak, which is 6,069 metres in the Karakoram range, Pakistan, had Laura succumb to a mountain accident. A rescue operation was launched, but on July 29, 2025, it was called off. Now, Laura's management team also stated that Laura always wanted her body to be recovered, but not be a risk to anyone. A part of the statement read:

"It was Laura Dahlmeier's express and written will that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to recover her. It was her wish to leave her body behind on the mountain in this case. This is also in line with the wishes of her relatives."

The local authorities had launched the operation when Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, had made a distress call. She could descend to the base camp with the help of rescuers. For the unversed, Laura was the first female biathlete to win both pursuit gold in the same Olympics. She won two gold medals back at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018, and in 2017 had won the women's biathlon World Cup. Laura had taken home bronze in the 2018 Olympic individual game and, at the age of 25, withdrew from sports in 2019.
