Nidhi Mishra Dubey, a 20-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, was like any other newly married woman, filled with dreams of a beautiful life ahead with her husband. However, fate had other plans for her. Within only a year, when she was 21, her world crumbled around her. Her husband, Naik Mukesh Kumar Dubey from the Mahar regiment, was a soldier in the Indian Army who even served in the Kargil War. He suddenly passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. To add to the tragedy, Nidhi was 4 months pregnant and the time. Widowed at only 21, heartbroken with a child in her womb, she had to face another brutal reality. After her husband's passing, Nidhi's in-laws rejected her and threw her out of their home.

Pregnant, homeless and emotionally shattered, Nidhi returned to her mother's house. Struggling with grief, Nidhi soon fell into depression. At a time when she needed compassion the most, she had to face the brutal reality of losing her life partner and fight her inner battles all by herself.

Nidhi was contacted by senior officers from her late husband's unit, who were moved by her resolute spirit and determination, and suggested that she consider joining the Indian army herself. Thanks to special provisions for war widows, she was already eligible to apply for the position. The journey ahead was not a smooth ride. She had to appear and clear the gruelling service selection board SSB exams in addition to meeting physical fitness standards that the job demanded.
