New Zealand singer and songwriter Lorde has been making headlines with her return to a bolder style, as showcased in her recently released album, Solar Power. The album has already topped charts in several countries, marking her return to synth-pop and dance-pop styles, which were missing from her previous album, Solar Power, featuring soft and acoustic vibes. Recently, the singer announced her Ultrasound World Tour to back her fourth album, Virgin. Amid this, people have been finding more information about her. So, let's know what her real name is and what her stage name means.
For the uninitiated, Lorde is the stage name of the New Zealand singer, born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor in 1996. The singer began performing during her teen years and adopted the name Lorde before the release of her 2013 album, Pure Heroine. For the uninitiated, Lorde's career began early, at around 12 years old, when she signed a contract with Universal Music Group after they stumbled upon a singing video of the singer from her middle school talent show. As Lorde releases her music videos, her fans begin to discover more about her origins and personal story, which helps connect her with others and earns her international acclaim.
For the uninitiated, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor chose the name 'Lorde' as her stage name due to her fascination with grandeur and aristocracy. In several of her interviews, the singer has stated that she sought to incorporate the timelessness and authenticity of the name 'Lord' into her work. Well, as the term is 'Lord', which is somewhat masculine, the singer wanted to make it feminine.
For this reason, she took a unique approach and added an extra 'E' to make it look more feminine in form. It was when Lorde was just 16 years old that she chose this name for herself. In a 2017 interview with 60 Minutes Australia, the singer revealed that this was due to her fascination with nobility and aristocracy. She revealed that when she hit on the term 'Lord', she liked it so much, and she decided to add an 'E' to the name to make it feminine. She said:
"It was that nobility, aristocracy obsession that I had. I hit upon "Lord" and loved the way it sounded, and then I was like, it would be quite cool to add an "E" to feminise it."
For the uninitiated, Lorde's album, Solar Power, was released back in August 2022, and to support it, the singer is going on a world tour, which she has titled the Solar Power World Tour. This is one of her major cycling tours since 2022-2023 after Solar Power. The recent tour is scheduled to begin on September 17, 2025, and will conclude in February 2026, encompassing 53 arena dates. The North Arena tour will include 26 shows and 19 performances across Europe, among others, as reported.
