Madhuri Dixit is the undisputed queen of Bollywood, who has been ruling the industry since the 80s. Madhuri, who made her acting debut with the critically acclaimed film, Abodh, gave many hits in her career four decades. Amid her successful career, Madhuri Dixit was linked to many leading actors in Bollywood. One such alleged affair of Madhuri that got a lot of attention was with Sanjay Dutt. It was during the 1990s when Madhuri was rumoured to be dating Sanjay. But what went wrong between them? Let us dive deep into Madhuri and Sanjay’s relationship.
Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit worked together in films like Khatron Ke Khiladi, Thaanedaar, Saajan, Khalnayak, Ilaaka, Sahibaan, and many more. Their on-screen chemistry paved the way for their off-screen love. Sanjay and Madhuri were the hottest topic in the 90s, and as many insiders said, the duo was quite serious about one another.

It was during the shooting of Saajan when rumours of Madhuri and Sanjay’s relationship hit the headlines. Apart from their comfortable bond on screen, the two were very fond of each other’s company. In a throwback interview with a leading daily, Madhuri heaped praises on Sanjay and said:
“My favourite partner is Sanjay Dutt, he’s a real joker…and his stories make me laugh all the time, but he is also a gentleman. Sanju is a fantastic person. He has a loving heart and, in contrast to the widely held view, a good sense of humour. He is the only guy who makes me laugh all the time. He does not play games. He is open and uncomplicated.”
To this day, Madhuri has never acknowledged her dating rumors with Sanjay Dutt. However, it was one of the most discussed topics in the Bollywood social circle. In Yaseer Usman’s book, Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, a popular director who refuses to reveal his identity claimed that Sanjay would keep whispering ‘I Love You’ to Madhuri. In his words:
“He was always following Madhuri Dixit around and whispering I love you.”
Sanjay Dutt was already a married man when he fell in love with Madhuri’s charm. His wife, Richa Sharma, had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and was in the USA for her treatment when Sanjay fell hopelessly in love with Madhuri. When Richa came back to India to resolve her issues with Sanjay, she was heartbroken to witness his love for Madhuri.

Richa blamed the distance between her and Sanjay as one reason the actor fell for Madhuri. She returned to India with the hope that she would be able to save her marriage and lead a normal life with Sanjay again. However, the cracks could not be mended, and Richa returned to New York. Richa revealed that Sanjay badly treated her, and there was no scope for them to mend their relationship.
Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt’s affair came to an end when he was arrested in 1993 for illegal possession of arms during the Mumbai blast. She distanced herself from him and stopped taking his calls too. As per a story published in Stardust magazine, titled, ‘Madhuri Dumps Sanjay’, it was written that the actress had told Sanjay’s sister to ask him not to call her. In her words:
“Please tell Sanju not to call me up ever. Tell him that it's all over.”
Sanjay was shattered when Madhuri broke up with him. Sanjay’s wife, Richa Sharma once talked about the same and shared that he always wanted someone to lean on emotionally. Elaborating on the same, Richa said:
“At every point in his life, he needs someone to lean on emotionally. Like he was dependent on Madhuri. Now that she has ditched him, he is going to be a shattered man."
Madhuri has always quashed the rumours of her affair with Sanjay Dutt. While Sanjay, on the other hand has given hints about his love for the actress. During an event in 2017, Sanjay was asked which actress he would like to marry if given a choice, and pat came his reply as he stated:
“I would like to marry Madhuri Dixit."
Madhuri Dixit’s charm is untamable, and there are very few actresses of her caliber today. Even though she never accepted dating Sanjay Dutt, their love story is still one of the most discussed topics.
