Madhuri Dixit was the top actress in Bollywood during the '90s, and she gave tough competition to other divas with her beauty, acting, and dance skills. She was also India's national crush at the peak of her career, and many actors and other celebrities were obsessed with her. However, recently, veteran actor Raza Murad revealed that Madhuri experienced a downfall in her career as soon as she began her acting journey. Meanwhile, a marriage proposal put forward by her parents was also rejected by a popular playback singer during those days.
Madhuri Dixit made her Bollywood debut in the 1984 film, Abodh. The actress then went on to star in few more films, however none of them did well at the box office. Madhuri, as a result, was getting neither recognition nor attention. In an interview with Filmy Charcha, Raza Murad said that she was doing 'insignificant films' and that nobody noticed her or cared for her. The veteran actor then revealed that as her career was not taking off, the actress' parents wanted her to get married. They even arranged a meeting between Madhuri and a playback singer but he rejected her stating that she was 'too thin'. Talking about this difficult period in Madhuri's life, Raza said:
“She was doing insignificant films like Abodh and Awara Baap. Nobody cared for her, nobody noticed her. Her parents decided to get her married, because her career was at rock bottom. They approached a playback singer, and arranged a meeting between them. He looked at her and said, ‘She’s too thin’.”
Raza Murad said that it was basically 'pack-up time' for Madhuri in the Bollywood industry, however being noticed by ace director, Subhash Ghai changed everything for her. The veteran actor recalled that Madhuri was filming in Kashmir, and Subhash Ghai was also there for some work. The actress' hairdresser was an acquaintance of Subhash and introduced Madhuri to him. The director was instantly struck by her appearance and asked her to meet him in Mumbai. That is how Subhash Ghai re-launched Madhuri Dixit's career by casting her in the superhit film, Ram Lakhan. A year later, the actress became the beloved 'Dhak Dhak girl' after signing Tezaab. Raza Murad was quoted as saying:
“Some time later, she was filming in Kashmir with Rajesh Khanna. Close by, Subhash Ghai was also at work. Her hairdresser went to meet him, and he asked what film she was working on. She introduced him to Madhuri, and he was immediately struck by her appearance. He asked her to meet him in Mumbai, and re-launched her because he had a good sense. Otherwise, it was basically pack-up time for her.”
Popular playback singer, Suresh Wadkar's song, Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le for the film Sadma is an evergreen tune. He has also sung the popular romantic song, Tumse Milke for the Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit-starrer film, Parinda. According to rumours, he is the one who rejected the actress' marriage proposal. In Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2023, the host asked Suresh if the rumours were true that he had once rejected a superstar actress' marriage proposal put forward by her parents. Suresh looked at his wife and said that he was glad to have found 'madhuri named Padma'. This answer spoke volumes and has hinted that the rumours were true.
