Maha Shivratri falls on the 14th night of the lunar month of Phalguna. On this day, Shiva's devotees keep fast, chant, pray, and visit temples to offer arghya and seek Mahadeva's blessings. It's a night of understanding the deeper cosmic balance presented by Shiva and feeling the divine presence. There are multiple stories available about this day. While some believe that on Maha Shivratri, lord Shiva got married to Parvati, others say that on this day, Shiva performed Tandava nritya, which led to both creation and destruction. Well, on this auspicious day of Shivratri, let us talk about the Triyuginarayan temple in Uttarakhand, which is believed to be the vivah sthal of Lord Shiva and Parvati.
For those who are unaware, Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati were said to have been married in the Triyuginarayan temple. The temple is situated in Triyuginarayan village in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. While this temple is famous for the fact that it's the vivah sthal of Shiva and Parvati, it's dedicated to Vishnu. While some believe that Vishnu took up the responsibility of the priest in Lord Shiva and Parvati's wedding, other stories reveal that the sacred divine wedding was witnessed by Vishnu.
According to some other folklore, it was Lord Bramha who performed the priestly duties at Shiva and Parvati's wedding, while Lord Vishnu did all the rituals as the bride's brother. Reportedly, a stone is kept at the place where Shiva and Parvati got married, and the stone is called Bramha Shila. Shiva and Parvati reportedly chose this place to be their vivah sthal, by being in awe of the peaceful surroundings.
Reportedly, the name, Triyuginarayan has been derived from the Sanskrit word of 'external fire', Akhand dhuni. Reportedly, the holy fire was lit during the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and it's still burning in clockwise motion at this shrine. Another breakdown of the name Triyuginarayan is the combination of 'Tri', which means three, Yug means Epochs, while Narayan is the synonym of Lord Vishnu. Thus, the meaning of the temple's name is that Shiva and Parvati got married three aeons (billion) of yugs ago, and Narayan witnessed the same.
Triyginarayan temple is situated above the mountain, which is 1,980 meters above sea level. The temple is made of wood and stones, and reportedly, in terms of architecture, it looks like the Kedarnath temple. The surroundings are extremely peaceful, and the courtyard is the origin of a stream that feeds four to five kunds nearby. As per folklore, the temple was built 1200 years ago, and the structure was created by the saint, author, and philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. Inside the temple, there is a 2-foot silver Vishnu murti with Lakshmi and Saraswati, along with a small Shiva lingam placed in the sanctum sanctorum.

The pilgrims and devotees find this place spiritually magical, which attracts them to this divine place. During July-August, the to-be married couples. Reportedly, the couples tie the knot on the pillars of the mandir, and pray for their bond to be everlasting. It's believed that if someone carries the ashes from the fire and keeps them in a clean place, then it brings conjugal happiness.
