Roopa Ganguly is one of the most talented actresses in the Indian film world. She has contributed immensely to the field with some of her most exemplary works and has worked under the tutelage of eminent filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh, Mrinal Sen, B.R. Chopra, Aparna Sen among others. Roopa is best remembered to date for her exemplary performance in the role of ‘Draupadi’ in B.R. Chopra’s telefilm adaptation of the same. However, despite attaining such heights in her professional life, the diva has faced an equally turbulent phase in her personal life, that led her to attempt suicide not once, but thrice. Roopa Chatterjee’s turbulent personal life

Away from the limelight of her professional success, Roopa Ganguly always tried to keep her personal life tucked away. However, unlike her smooth sailing career, her personal life was everything turbulent. The actress got married to Dhrubo Mukherjee, a mechanical engineer in 1992. The couple welcomed their son, Aakash in 1997. However, their marital life hit rock bottom, with frequent fights and abuses. And finally, they separated in 2007. Thereafter, Roopa was in a live-in relationship with a young Bengali singer, Dibyendu Mukherjee. Unfortunately, this time too, troubles crept up between the two and they decided to call it a splitsville.

When Roopa revealed trying to attempt suicide thrice

In one of her earlier interviews, Roopa Chatterjee had talked about the lowest state of her mental health, especially after her divorce. The actress revealed how time and again she tried to commit suicide, and was saved eventually. She mentioned:

“I attempted suicide not once but thrice- once before my son was born, twice later. All three times, I was adamant that I wanted to kill myself. The first time, I consumed an overdose of sleeping pills. But every time I was saved. I had tried my best to kill myself, But I guess God wanted me to endure more.”

When Roopa talked about her troubled marriage with ex-husband, Dhrubo Mukherjee

In the same revelation, Roopa recalled the past and talked about her troubled marriage with her ex-husband, Dhrubo Mukherjee. She mentioned that all was smooth sailing, up till in 2002, they started having frequent fights. Roopa further revealed that she would often bring divorce papers and ultimately tear them, since Dhrubo used to beg for forgiveness and they would patch-up. Concluding how she finally couldn’t take the stress anymore, she said:

“Around 2002, I could not handle the stress. Main divorce papers lati, phaad deti, phir laati, phir phaad deti. I used to ask for a divorce and he used to apologise. We used to patch-up.”

When Roopa revealed her ex-husband, Dhrubo’s reacting to her finding love again in Dibyendu Mukherjee

In the concluding segment of the interview, Roopa talked about confessing to her ex-husband, Dhrubo that she found love again in Dibyendu Mukherjee. She mentioned that Dhrubo couldn’t take it and added that she decided to move to Mumbai soon after. Moreover, she mentioned that her ex-husband didn’t want their son, Aakash to meet Roopa and Dibyendu, and had even won the legal custody of him. Moreover, she clarified that she never demanded any alimony from her ex-husband, Dhrubo.

When Roopa revealed she never watched B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat

In an earlier interview with The Times Of India, Roopa Ganguly made a startling revelation when she mentioned that she never saw her own show, Mahabharat on television. Sharing she saw it years later when the show got re-aired during the time of the pandemic, Roopa revealed:

“I got to finally see the series properly on television when Ramayan and Mahabharat were brought back on TV for a re-run during the lockdown, and I really enjoyed it. It also made me very nostalgic about the shooting days.”
