Caste discrimination is a deeply rooted prejudice existing in our society, which often questions the existence of humanity in today's world. An incident of 2016 has recently resurfaced on the internet. It's the story of Bapurao Tajne, a man from Kalambeshwar village in Maharashtra’s Washim district, whose action won many hearts. Bapurao is a daily wage labourer who dug a well for his wife, who fell prey to casteism. The incident was somewhat shocking because Bapurao had managed to accomplish it within just 40 days, single-handedly.
Bapurao Tajne, a resident of Kalambeshwar village in Maharashtra’s Washim district has made the impossible possible. After his wife was denied the use of water from the upper-caste wells, Bapurao decided to dig a well for her. Being a daily wage labourer, he had to manage both his work and the time to dig the well. However, despite having no experience or any hydrological guidance, Bapurao completed digging the well single-handedly within just 40 days.
During these 40 days, Bapurao ensured that he spent a total of six hours on the well each day. He worked four hours before leaving for his labour work and spent two hours after returning from his work. Initially, the village people and Bapurao’s family doubted him, as they had already seen three wells and a borewell dry up. However, on the 40th day, Bapurao completed digging the well, which was about 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide. Now, the entire Dalit community from his village uses that well.
Soon after the news resurfaced on the internet, netizens showered love and also lauded Bapurao’s action. One user wrote, "The real hero." Another user commented, "Ese log bahut km hote hain." Praising Bapurao’s love for his wife, "Mard Apni pasandida Aurat ke liye kuch bhi kar sakte hai." Sharing the disappointment regarding casteism prevalence in the society, one user wrote, "Disappointment is that India is seem to became a vishwaguru and in such a modern & developed stage there is still cast discrimination in India. No Poor, No Rich No Dalit." Lauding Bapurao’s hard work, a user commented, "Salute bhai ki mehnat ko." Earlier, in an interview with The Times Of India, Bapurao and Sangita shared how the task of digging the well was completed. Bapurao expressed that he didn’t want to name the owner who insulted them and refused to give them water. He mentioned how he went to Malegaon, a town closer to his village and bought things necessary to dig a well. In his words:
"I don’t want to name the well owner for I don’t want bad blood in the village. However, I feel that he insulted us because we are poor and Dalits. I came home that day in March and almost cried. I resolved never to beg for water from anybody. I went to Malegaon (the closest town) and bought tools and within an hour I started digging."
On the other hand, Sangita repented for mocking Bapurao, when he first started digging the well. However, she shared that later the family helped him. Sangita also wished the villagers to come forward and help them furthermore in digging the well. In her words:
"I did not help him a bit until he struck water. Now the whole family, except the two kids, helps him as he deepens and widens the well. It is already 15 feet deep and Bapurao wants to dig 5 feet further. It is 6 feet wide at the top and he wants to make it 8 feet wide. We are hoping our neighbours will help us in this task."
