Air India Plane Crash: Filmmaker, Mahesh Jirawala Still Missing, Last Traced Within 700m Of Site

One of the most tragic aviation accidents took place in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, which has sent shockwaves through the nation. A London-bound Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad right after it took off. Many heart-wrenching stories are coming from families of the victims who lost their lives. However, some families are also shrouded in uncertainty, whose loved ones have been missing without any clue after the tragic accident. One such family is that of Mahesh Jirawala, who has been missing since the plane crash, and his last location traces back within 700 metres of the crash site.

Mahesh Jirawala went missing on the same day as the plane crash

Mahesh Kalawdia, professionally known as Mahesh Jirawala, had gone to meet someone near Law Garden, Ahmedabad, stated his wife, Hetal, to PTI. This was on June 12, 2025, the same day as the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. Around 1:14 PM, Mahesh had called Hetal to inform her that his meeting was over and that he was heading home. However, he never arrived, and his wife and family have been frantically searching for him ever since.

After he did not return home, Hetal tried calling Mahesh but his phone was switched off. A police report was filed following his unusual disappearance. Moreover, when the police traced his last location, it was found out that he was just 700 metres away from the site of the crash. Adding more twist to the story, his phone switched off at 1:40 PM, a minute after the ill-fated Air India AI171 flight took off. Hetal told:

"My husband called me at 1.14 pm to tell me his meeting is over and that he is on his way home. However, when he did not return, I called up on his phone but it was switched off. After police were intimated, the last location of his mobile phone showed he was 700 metres away from the crash site."

Mahesh Jirawala's scooter and phone are also missing, and the family claims he would not have used that particular route

The tragic Air India flight crashed into B.J. Medical College hostel in the residential area of Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Mahesh had visited Law Garden and was on the way to his home in Naroda. His family claims that the filmmaker could have come home without having to pass Meghaninagar, the location of the crash. They find it unusual that Mahesh was in the locality where the plane crash took place since he never takes that route to return home. The filmmaker's scooter and phone have also been missing since June 12, 2025. His wife, Hetal stated:

“The phone switched off around 1:40 pm—just a minute after the flight took off. His scooter and phone are also missing, which is highly unusual as he never takes that route to return home.”

Mahesh Jirawala's family fears he might have been one of the ground victims

This tragic incident has claimed 265 lives. Except for one lone survivor, 241 passengers on board the flight died. The rest of the victims are those people who were in and around the B.J. Medical College hostel, into which the Air India aircraft crashed. Since Mahesh Jirawala's last known location was quite near the crash site, his family fears that he might have been a ground victim. The filmmaker's family have submitted DNA samples and are awaiting the results.
