Meet Mahua Moitra Who Tied Knot For Second Time With Pinaki Misra, Fearless Politician, Ex-Banker

Mahua Moitra is one of the most vocal and bold politicians in India today. She is a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and she rose to national fame with her fiery speeches, sharp questions and fearlessness in speaking the truth. Mahua Moitra first stood out when she entered the Lok Sabha in 2019. In the media, Mahua Moitra has often been referred to as a ‘firebrand’ politician.

Mahua Moitra’s early life

Mahua Moitra was born in 1974, in Assam in a Bengali Hindu family and studied Economics and Mathematics at the Mount Holyoke College in the United States. After college, she worked at JPMorgan as an investment banker in New York and London. But in 2009, she left her job and came back to India and joined politics. Initially, she joined the Congress party and worked under Rahul Gandhi’s youth team but, later, she switched to the Trinamool Congress, where she found her real place in politics.

Mahua Moitra’s first viral speech

Mahua Moitra’s first speech in Parliament in 2019 wasn’t just memorable, it made history. In her debut speech as a first-time MP, she boldly listed the ‘7 signs of early fascism’, inspired by a poster she saw at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in the United States. She said that these signs, like control over the media, silencing of people who disagree, and mixing religion with politics, were starting to appear in India. She was very sharp, clear and well-researched with her speech. Even though, after her speech she faced criticism from some political leaders, many citizens, especially the youth, appreciated her speech and the courage to say it. The speech quickly went viral online, got millions of views and established Mahua as a bold and independent voice in Indian politics. 

Mahua Moitra’s political career

Mahua’s career in politics started when she was elected as an MLA in West Bengal in 2016, and then later when she became a Member of Parliament from Krishnanagar in 2019. Since then, Mahua has been known as one of the fiercest critics of the central government. She has never hesitated to question authority, defend constitutional values, or speak up for the common people. 

Apart from delivering strong speeches, Mahua has strongly spoken out for women’s rights, calling out sexism in politics and demanding gender equality. Her sharp debating style sets her different from others. She often quotes famous writers and thinkers, and her presence in Parliament is both commanding and refreshing. However, her boldness has landed her up in a few controversies as well, but she has stood strong and fought all her challenges. Her future in politics looks promising, especially as a fearless voice. 

Controversies and challenges faced by Mahua Moitra

In 2023, Mahua Moitra found herself in a major controversy when she was accused of taking bribes from a businessman in exchange for raising questions in Parliament. The issue created a lot of buzz in the media and politics. Mahua strongly denied the allegations and said it was a political plan to stop her from speaking out. As the issue gained attention, her party, the Trinamool Congress, stayed away from supporting her openly. In December 2023, The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee looked into the case and later suggested that she should be removed from Parliament. But this did not stop her from anything. In the 2024 general elections, she was re-elected from the Krishnanagar constituency.

Mahua Moitra’s personal life

Mahua Moitra is known for keeping her personal life private but, she recently started a new chapter of her life. Recently, she married Pinaki Misra, a senior advocate and former Member of Parliament from Odisha. The wedding took place in a private ceremony in Germany, away from the public eye and attention. Her husband, Pinaki Misra is a politician and senior advocate. He has been elected four times as Member of Parliament from Puri, Odisha, starting his career in 1996. He is known for his calm and measured debate style and has also served on important parliamentary committees such as the Standing Committee on Finance and the Business Advisory Committee.
