Popular actress, Malavika Mohanan is back on the screen with her latest offering, Hridayapoorvam. The 32-year-old actress shared screen space with the 65-year-old Mohanlal in the movie, which has been directed by veteran filmmaker, Sathyan Anthikad. The film was released on August 28, 2025, and Sathyan and Mohanlal united after a decade. However, there has been constant chatter related to the 33-year age gap between them. The actress has now spoken in favour of the veteran actor.
Malavika and Mohanlal's movie, Hridayapoorvam, has sparked a conversation on the age gap issue. She had earlier dismissed age-gap-related conversations as immature and urged her fans to hold off on their judgments until the movie was released. Now, the actress, in an interview with NDTV, opened up about why she decided to be a part of the movie. Speaking on her experience of working with Mohanlal, Malavika shared:
"Hridayapoorvam really caught my attention because it's such a heartwarming story. The chance to work alongside someone like Mohanlal was also a huge draw for me. His experience and presence on set are just extraordinary, and there's so much to learn from him."
There have been ongoing discussions about why actresses between the ages of 20 and 30 are often cast opposite older stars in their 60s. The actress, earlier in a conversation with Ginger Media Entertainments during the promotion of Hridayapoorvam, addressed the trolls directly and shared that to comment without any knowledge was not fair. She said:
"I had responded to one such comment. Passing remarks without knowing the story or script of a film is immature. Let the film release first — if, after watching it, you feel the subject is unusual, then share your opinion. That’s fair. Everyone is entitled to their views."
Mohanlal, on one hand, has reunited with director, Sathyan after a decade. At the same time, Malavika feels that Sathyan Anthikad is an iconic director in Malayalam cinema, and it is on the bucket list of every actor to work with him. She spoke about her role in the movie and revealed that her character is multifaceted and layered. In her words:
"She's someone who experiences both joy and struggle, and I hope that audiences connect with her. It's a film that tugs at your heartstrings while also bringing in moments of levity, and I think the audience will appreciate that balance."
On the one hand, the conversation about the age gap is nothing new. Cinema's leading stars, from Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Shah Rukh Khan to Chiranjeevi, have all worked with women of all age groups. However, in the interview, Malavika shared that she is always open to exploring varied roles and opportunities. She shared:

"I think the most important thing for me is whether the character challenges me and allows me to grow as an actor. I try to pick roles that feel fresh and offer something new. Whether it's a strong, dramatic role or something more light-hearted, I want to ensure I'm always learning and evolving. For me, it's about diversity and not being confined to one kind of character."
