An actor par excellence, Mammootty is counted as one of the most revered celebrities in the South Indian film industry. He has predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema, has also created magic in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. He made his acting debut in 1971 with the film, Anubhavangal Paalichakal and since then, there has been no looking back for this versatile actor, who has been winning the hearts of the audience for more than five decades.

Though Mammootty’s career has been an open book, but the same cannot be said about his personal life. The actor got married to Sulfath shortly after he ventured into films. Despite being a married actor, Mammootty’s fan following was immense. The couple is proud parents to two kids, a daughter, Surumi and a son, Dulquer Salmaan.

Though Mammooty had an arranged marriage with Sulfath in 1979, the duo still sets marriage goals for all young couples out there. But do you know, it was a divorce case that changed Mammootty’s perception about marriage forever?

Not many people know this, but before becoming an actor, Mammootty was a lawyer. After his graduation from Maharaja College, Ernakulam, Mammootty went on to pursue L.L.B. from Government Law College, Ernakulam. He practised law for two years before venturing into acting.

During an interview with Manorama News for the show Nere Chowe, Mammooty revealed how a particular case changed his outlook on the institution of marriage. The actor recalled how he was fighting a divorce case, and the trial changed everything. In his words:

“I got a divorce case of a very old couple fighting for Section 125 of the CrPC. The couple were separated and the trial was on. Once as the hearing was going on in court, the woman got unconscious. Immediately, the man came running to her and took her to the hospital. She must be 75 and he must be 80 years of age.”

In the same interview, Mammootty shared that the old couple had spent years together, and it was because of the families that they decided to part ways. But seeing the care they had for each other even during the trial, made him believe in true love. Elaborating on the promise he made to himself on the day, Mammootty continued:

“The problem between them was with regard to their families. They left the case and that's when I realized their pain of separation. Even while the duo were apart, they had a concern and love for each other. I wasn't married then. But I promised to myself that if I get married, I will love her like how the couple loved each other.”

Sulfath is the only female friend Mammootty ever had

Regarded as one of the power couples of the Malayalam film industry, Mammootty and Sulfath have reinstated everyone’s faith in love and marriage. Ever since Sulfath walked into his life, Mammootty has seen a rise in his career. It was only after his marriage to Sulfath that the actor gave back-to-back hits. Sulfath, on the other hand, is his biggest support system.

Mammootty has always praised his wife, Sulfath, for her unconditional love and support for him and their kids. He has often credited his wife for keeping him grounded. During an interaction, the megastar stated that his wife is his only female friend he has ever had.

Mammootty’s son, Dulquer, too had followed the footsteps of his parents and got married early in life. But for him, his parents stand as a testament to true love. During the promotional event of his movie, Oru Yamandan Prema Kadha, Dulquer talked about his parents and their love for each other despite being married for years and said:

“I find my parents love story a bit extraordinary. They are so special. They get easily worried if not phoned or seen each other for a few time. They even speak on the phone for a long time. In fact, Acha (Mammootty) is like on the phone, once he completes his shot. When he hears a cut from the director, he will reach for the phone. They are beautifully connected to each other and their love story is so special."

Mammootty and Sulfath have been married for 46 years now, and despite a more than four-decade-long relationship, they are still deeply and passionately in love with each other.
