Mamta Kulkarni On Being Chosen As Mahamandaleshwar Of The Kinnar Akhara, 'Meri Pareeksha Li Gayi...'

Former Bollywood actress, Mamta Kulkarni is leading all the headlines after she embarked on her spiritual journey on January 24, 2025, at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. She was made the 'Mahamandaleshwar' in the Kinnar Akhara with the actress’ coronation ceremony. She reportedly performed the Pind Daan at the holy Sangam.

Now, Mamta spoke about her spiritual journey and being chosen as the 'Mahamandaleshwar' of the Kinnar Akhara. Speaking to different media platforms after her coronation ceremony, the actress stated:

“Mujhe poocha gaya, lekin aaj mujhe maha shakti ne aadesh diya ki mujhe ye chunna hai. Aaj mujhe 23 saal hog aye dhyaan aur tapp karte hue. Meri kaafi pareeksha li gayi, har prakaar ke prashan se mai pass ho gayi, tab jaake mujhe Mahamandaleshwar upaadhi prapt hui.”

Mamta Kulkarni changed her name after becoming the 'Mahamandaleshwar'

After becoming 'Mahamandaleshwar' of the Kinnar Akhara, Mamta adopted a new name, 'Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri’. For the uninitiated, Mahamndaleshwar is a special title reserved for Hindu monks of the Dashanami order, and the leaders are responsible for spreading the Sanatan Dharma. Kinnar Akhara was established in 2015 and is dedicated to the inclusion of transgender individuals into spiritual spheres.

In a conversation with ANI, Laxmi Narayan opened up about Mamta Kulkarni being ordained as a Mahamandleshwar and said:

"Kinnar akhada is going to make Mamta Kulkarni (former Bollywood actress) a Mahamandleshwar. She has been named as Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri. As I am talking here, all the rituals are underway. She has been in touch with Kinnar Akhada and me for the last one and a half years... She is allowed to perform the character of any devotional figure if she wants as we do not prohibit anyone from performing their art."

Mamta Kulkarni’s professional life

Mamta Kulkarni was one of the most sought-after actresses in the 90s. With films like Karan Arjun, China Gate, Tirangaa, Aashiq Awara, Krantiveer, Baazi, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Policewala Gunda, and more, Mamta captivated millions of hearts. Despite the amazing work she did in Bollywood, her career couldn’t take off because of her alleged involvement with drug lord Vicky Goswami.

The actress soon left India and came back after 25 years, when she was given a clean chit. After her return to Mumbai, Mamta told ANI that she had no plans to return to acting. In her words:

“I have not come back for Bollywood and I am not planning to make a return as an actress.”
