The tragic Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad has shaken the nation to its core. It claimed the lives of a total of 265 people until now which includes individuals from every nook and corner of the country and even abroad. Among those deceased were two bright young girls, Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma and Lamnunthem Singson, full of dreams in their 20s from Manipur. They both dreamt of chasing the sky and rose over the local issues to begin their career as flight attendants some time ago. However, their journey full of hope, determination and dreams was met with a fatal tragedy.
Just like other parts of the country, Manipur, situated in the far north-eastern side of India, has lost young and vibrant professionals who were on duty on the ill-fated Air India flight, which crashed into a doctor's hostel on June 12, 2025. One of them was Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, a resident of the Thoubal district in Manipur. In an interview with NDTV, her family revealed that she had recently joined the job as a flight attendant through a campus recruitment process at DM College of Commerce, Imphal, two years ago.
She was the second of three sisters, who used to always hold big dreams and dared to fulfil them with her hard work and courage. Her elder sister, Geentanjali spoke to the media and shared that Nganthoi was excitedly looking forward to her flight to London and texted them about the same. However, the internet ban after recent violent clashes in Manipur didn't allow them to have a video chat. Later, when the internet was restored, someone told them about the flight crash. Nganthoi's sister said:
"It was her dream to become a flight attendant. We couldn't chat on video as usual due to the internet ban. But she messaged me while I was in school that she would be flying to London today and that she would be unreachable. She said she would return on June 15. I wished her a safe flight and told her we'd contact her when we got the internet connection back. Then we heard of the plane crash from an aunt on the phone."
Another young starlet from Manipur on the ill-fated Air India Boeing 787-8 was Lamnunthem Singson. Just like Nganthoi, Lamnunthem also joined Air India in 2024. She didn't have it easy as her family was among those who got displaced during the ethnic riots in Manipur in 2023. Lamnunthem had lost a father at a young age and was raised by a mother who now lives in a small rented house. Her mother, Nemneilhing Singson, shared that she had a conversation with her daughter just a few hours before the crash, where she informed her that she was going to Ahmedabad for duty.
It all started after an Air India Boeing 787 flight AI 171 crashed within minutes after its take-off from the city' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport. It carried 230 passengers and 12 cabin members. Except for one survivor, Ramesh Vishvaskumar who is being treated in the hospital, everyone on the flight lost their lives after its pilot sent 'Mayday' calls to ATC.
